Ash is the byproduct of Charcoal production at the Charcoal Kiln. Every Wood-to-Charcoal and Hardwood-to-Charcoal cycle leaves Ash behind alongside the finished Charcoal. Ash is then consumed as the bulk input for Homemade Gunpowder at the Millstones (10 Sulfur + 20 Ash = 10 Homemade Gunpowder per 45-second cycle). It is an Uncommon resource with item level 1.
It is a Uncommon resource gathered or crafted in the world of Windrose with item level 1.

Homemade Gunpowder |
Ash comes from two places. Most of it is a free byproduct: every time the Charcoal Kiln turns Wood or Hardwood into Charcoal, it leaves Ash behind alongside the finished fuel. If you ever need Ash faster than the kiln supplies it, the Millstones can grind two Charcoal directly into six Ash, which is the quickest top-up when a powder run is short.
Ash exists almost entirely to feed gunpowder. At the Millstones, twenty Ash and ten Sulfur combine into ten Homemade Gunpowder over a 45 second cycle. Because Ash is the bulk half of that recipe, players who fire muskets and cannons a lot end up running the Charcoal Kiln constantly just to keep the Ash stockpile ahead of demand.
Sulfur is the gating ingredient rather than Ash: it is mined from rocky nodes in the Foothills and Coastal Jungle and needs an Iron Pickaxe. With a stack size of 100 and a weight of only 0.1, Ash is cheap to hoard, so the practical advice is to stockpile it freely and let Sulfur supply set your powder output.
Weight 0.1 per unit; factor it into inventory capacity when gathering.
