Major expansion: full 5-slot system, 7 named sets, upgrade-to-8 and ascension, armor averaging, accessory slots
Armor and equipment in Windrose is a 5-slot system (Head, Chest, Legs, Hands, Feet) with rarity tiers, set bonuses, and an upgrade path that scales gear up to level 8 and optionally ascends Rare pieces to Epic. Armor choices tie directly into the talent system and weapon builds, with seven named sets each favoring a specific playstyle. Accessory slots (rings, necklaces, backpacks) layer additional bonuses on top of armor.
Windrose divides armor across five body slots plus three accessory categories. All armor pieces contribute to defense, and two-piece and four-piece set bonuses provide meaningful playstyle boosts.
Slot | Items in Database |
|---|---|
Armor (5 slots combined: Head, Chest, Legs, Hands, Feet) | 41 |
Rings (accessory) | 36 |
Necklaces (accessory) | 18 |
Backpacks (accessory) | 5 |
Total equipment pieces | 100 |
Armor follows the same rarity tier system as weapons. Higher rarity means better base defense and more impactful set bonuses.
Rarity | Notes |
|---|---|
Common | Basic armor with minimal defense; early tutorial gear |
Uncommon | Solid baseline stats, copper-tier workhorse gear |
Rare | Significantly better defense plus set bonus slots; mid-game gear |
Epic | Highest-tier confirmed at Early Access launch; multiple bonuses stack |
Legendary / Mythic | Tiers exist in the database but no items are documented at these tiers in the current Early Access build |
All armor can be upgraded up to level 8 at the Upgrading Station using crafting materials. Rare-tier armor at level 8 can be ascended to Epic using Tumbaga Ingots (from Blackbeard Treasure Map chests), which is identical to the weapon ascension flow. The combination of level-up and rarity-ascension means a single piece can evolve significantly over the game's progression.
Windrose averages defense across all five equipped armor slots. Upgrading only one piece while leaving the other four at level 1 produces a low effective defense number, regardless of how good the upgraded piece looks on paper. Experienced players upgrade every slot evenly. A fully level-6 set outperforms a level-8 chest paired with four level-1 pieces on pure defense math.
Seven named armor sets have been documented in community sources, each with distinct 2-piece and 4-piece bonuses that align with specific talent-branch builds. The following entries summarize the most well-documented sets.
Set | 2pc Bonus | 4pc Bonus | Build Synergy |
|---|---|---|---|
-20% attack stamina cost | +15% one-handed weapon damage | Fencer rapier/saber | |
-30% sprint/jump/dash stamina cost | +15% ranged damage | Marksman pistol/musket/blunderbuss | |
Heavy tank set; specific bonuses continue to be documented | Continues to be documented | Toughguy Strength tank | |
+10% Critical Hit Chance per nearby enemy | +10% Critical Damage per nearby enemy | Crowd-focused builds |
Additional sets referenced in community sources include Scavenger's Set (tied to copper-tier armor progression) and several armor lines that continue to be mapped during Early Access. Consult the Upgrading Station interface and faction reputation rewards for the current list.
Talent builds pair naturally with armor sets. A Fencer build investing in Agility benefits from Flibustier's Attire because the -20% attack stamina lets rapier combos chain longer, while a Marksman build stacking Precision pairs with Marksman's Rig because the sprint stamina reduction makes repositioning between shots efficient. Heavy-hitter Crusher builds using greatswords or halberds pair with Juggernaut or Privateer's Regalia depending on whether you prioritize durability or crowd damage.
Rings and necklaces provide flat stat bonuses, crit chance, stamina regen boosts, and other passive effects. They are crafted at the Jewellery Table and Jeweller's Bench. Backpacks increase inventory capacity (Torn Sailcloth Bag is the first; higher tiers unlock with progression). Accessories are NOT averaged for defense the way armor is, so upgrading a single strong ring or necklace pays off immediately.
Craft at the Armor and Clothing Workshop (5 Wood + 10 Coarse Fabric, requires roof)
Loot from dungeon chests, Pirate Camp supply crates, and defeated named enemies
Purchase from faction traders at higher reputation tiers (500+ rep unlocks faction questlines and crafting recipes)
Upgrade existing pieces at the Upgrading Station to level 8, then ascend Rare pieces to Epic with Tumbaga Ingots
Disassemble unwanted armor at the Disassembly Table for partial material recovery
The community consensus for new players: rush to 180+ total defense across all five slots before attempting the starter-island Local Threat boss (Thomas Richards) or any Pirate Camp with multiple enemies. Every upgrade at the Armor and Clothing Workshop is worth the materials, and stacking food buffs (+Strength or +Agility) in front of fights further amplifies the effective defense:damage ratio.
