The Control Zone
October 16, 2026 at 06:25 PM
Added the Season 2 team switching rules, updated Bakurani and rain for the live season, and re-dated the hardcore and server modifier notes
WARDOGS is built around a single game mode rather than a menu of playlists. In every match, three teams compete to control one objective area, in a contest that works like a large-scale game of king of the hill.
A randomised Control Zone, two kilometres on each side, appears somewhere inside a single battlefield of 256 square kilometres. The team with the most players inside the zone steadily scores points, and the first team to reach 100 points wins the match. Because the zone location changes from match to match, no two games play out on exactly the same ground. Early access opened on 10 September 2026 with three maps, each of which carries three different variations, so the pool of possible battlefields is wider than the map count alone suggests. The single objective is the early access starting point rather than the finished plan: the developers list additional objective variations among the things they intend to add once early access is under way.
One of the three maps has been named by the developers, Bakurani, where Season 2 moved and rebuilt all three team spawns with purpose-built routes to the zone. Season 2, live since 15 October 2026, also added a rain weather preset that affects visibility, sound and spotting range; see The Setting.
Scoring runs on a fixed clock. Every thirty seconds, the team with the most players inside the Control Zone earns one point, and the first team to reach one hundred points takes the match. The developers set that interval out in the pinned questions thread they keep alongside the game, which settles a figure players had traded among themselves for months without confirmation. It also sets the shape of a match: one hundred points at one point every thirty seconds means no team can win in under fifty minutes of held ground, and most matches run longer than that, because the count is taken again every half minute and the lead moves whenever a rival team wins the head count.
The count is of players, not of kills or of captures. A team that puts more bodies inside the zone and keeps them there scores, however those players got in and whatever they are doing once inside. That is why transport, revives and logistics pay as well as they do, and why a squad that clears the zone but then leaves it to chase kills gives the point away on the next tick.

Within the larger zone sits a shifting Hot Zone, a smaller sub-area that raises the stakes. Players inside it count double toward their team’s presence in the zone, so contesting it can tip the score, and it also pays out double cash through the cash economy. The Hot Zone moves over the course of a match, pulling fights toward new ground.
Its movement is not purely a matter of waiting. Teams can pull the Hot Zone toward ground they already hold by capturing the map's towers or by building a drill of their own, which is covered under Towers and Drills.
The developers are explicit that this is neither a battle royale nor an extraction shooter. There is no shrinking play area and no loot-extraction loop. The entire match revolves around taking and holding the zone, supported by the cash economy and the players’ own tactics.
Season 2 added friction for players who switch sides late to decide a match. Once a team is more than 10 points ahead, a player cannot switch teams again for 15 minutes after joining one, and anyone who switches teams or joins a match in progress has their map obscured and cannot use the spawn vehicle until they reach the Control Zone for the first time. The studio said the aim was to slow down team switch abusers while still letting players join their friends.
A hardcore mode exists by name. It appears as its own chapter in a development video published on 16 June 2026. What it changes has not been published, and neither has whether it is a separate kind of server or a setting on an ordinary one: as of 16 October 2026 no official source describes its rules, and the Season 2 patch notes do not mention it. The phrase hardcore shooter that turns up in the studio store posts describes the tone of the game as a whole and is not a reference to this mode.
Update 0.1.2 on 30 September 2026 added a Deploy screen that offers Infantry Mode and Low-Level community servers alongside the Official and Community lists, and the studio described them as servers running modifiers. As of 16 October 2026 it has not published what either modifier changes. On 16 October it said Limited Mode servers, with no power weapons and vehicles, are coming soon. The server browser is covered under Servers and Anti-Cheat.
