Napoleon Bonaparte is the emperor at the centre of Valor Mortis. He is the reason the war that killed William was being fought, the authority the Eternal Guard still answers to after the plague took it, and, once William is resurrected, a voice inside his head. He is played by the French actor Vincent Cassel.
The game is an alternate history, and the studio has been plain that it is not aiming for historical accuracy while still tying itself to historical themes, figures and events. In this version the conquest does not resolve. It halts in Eastern Europe, and the plague spreads across the continent in its wake, which the studio presents as one event rather than two. The Empire is an occupying power in the east for the whole of the story, and the game's own marketing writes in the Empire's voice, addressing the reader as a soldier and referring to "the Emperor" without irony.
The studio has also said the game contains "an intriguing conspiracy from the ashes of Napoleon's own writing", which places his papers rather than his battles at the centre of the plot.
The plague that corrupts William's body also grants him a dangerous power, and one consequence is that he hears Bonaparte's voice in his mind. For most of the pre-launch cycle the studio described that only as guidance. In August 2026 it put a purpose behind it for the first time: the voice is "guiding him to usurp The Shrike's resistance of the commonfolk".
That single line changes the shape of the story. It gives the emperor an objective rather than a presence, and it points the player character at a human resistance movement rather than only at the plague. What the studio has not said is whether the voice is really Napoleon, a symptom of the corruption, or something using his shape.

Cassel's voice appears in the demo as well as the full game. The September 2026 Voice Cast reveal names six further actor and character pairings, including James Alexander as William Dowsett and Jennifer English as The Shrike.
As of September 13, 2026, across the official store listing, the official site, the studio's Steam development posts and the published trailers, the studio has not said whether Napoleon appears on screen as a character, whether he can be fought, or how much of the game he narrates. It has not published a wider voice cast, and no credits list for the other named survivors has been released.
The cast reveal shows Napoleon as a uniformed character alongside Vincent Cassel's portrait. The launch overview describes a mysterious bond through which William hears Napoleon in his head, and places the halted eastern campaign after Napoleon's victory at Waterloo in this alternate history. That fictional victory is part of the game's setting, not a statement about the historical battle.
The September 13 paragraph above predates the wider cast reveal. Whether Napoleon can be fought and how much he narrates remain unpublished.
