The Tropico series is a franchise of city-building and political simulation games in which the player rules a tropical island nation as El Presidente. Tropico 7, due on January 28, 2027, is the seventh numbered entry. This page covers only the series background that Kalypso Media and Gaming Minds Studios have tied to Tropico 7; it does not describe the content of the earlier games.
History
Year | Event |
|---|---|
2001 | The first Tropico game is released |
2009 | Starting with Tropico 3, the franchise finds a home at Kalypso Media |
2025 | Tropico 7 is announced at gamescom 2025 on August 20 |
2026 | August marks the 25th anniversary of the franchise; the same year is Kalypso Media's 20th anniversary |
2027 | Tropico 7 is scheduled for January 28 |
These dates come from the second Tropico 7 developer log, published in August 2026 as an anniversary edition. It states that "The journey (and the success of El Presidente) began in 2001 with the very first Tropico game" and that the franchise has been with Kalypso since Tropico 3 in 2009. Kalypso's announcement post for Tropico 7 calls it "the next evolution of the award-winning city-building series".
Kalypso's online store lists products for Tropico Reloaded, Tropico 3, Tropico 4, Tropico 5 and Tropico 6 alongside Tropico 7.
A new studio for the series
Tropico 7 is the first Tropico game developed by Gaming Minds Studios, Kalypso's in-house studio, founded in 2009. In the anniversary developer log, studio heads Daniel and Kay said: "We've been creating strategy games since the early days of Kalypso Media, so Tropico has always been a series we admired from the sidelines."
In the same interview they summed up what they see as the core of the series: "For us, Tropico has always stood on three pillars: it's a deep city-builder, a political simulation full of meaningful decisions, and, above all, a satire that never takes itself too seriously." They added that these elements had defined the series for 25 years and that Tropico 7 aims to build on them while giving players more freedom.
Returning elements
Kalypso describes Tropico 7 as building on the series' formula. The publisher's material confirms these returning elements for Tropico 7:
El Presidente as the player's ruler, now able to walk through the city on foot
Penultimo, introduced in his April 2026 reveal as "Your favourite advisor" returning for Tropico 7
Edicts and constitutions, which the first developer log calls "an important part of Tropico 7"
Elections and election speeches
A satirical tone, which Kalypso keeps in its own announcements by writing many of them in character
What Kalypso says has changed
The official FAQ compares Tropico 7 with Tropico 6 directly. Under the heading "What's new in Tropico 7 compared to Tropico 6?", Kalypso lists these changes:
Change | Description in Tropico 7 |
|---|---|
Flatten mountains, dig lakes or build a new coastline; the FAQ calls Tropico 7 the first Tropico with terraforming | |
Scalable zones | Plantations, botanical gardens and similar zones can be sized to fit the city layout |
Deeper transportation mechanics | Expanded traffic management (see Traffic and Transportation) |
Direct El Prez interactions | El Presidente walks the city, visits buildings near the palace, waves to supporters and threatens opponents |
Building placement | Grid-based alignment or unrestricted placement (see City Building) |
Faction and Superpower Matrix | A view of political standing and its perks or problems (see Political Matrix) |
Council system | Meetings with faction spokespeople instead of random ultimatums (see Factions and the Council) |
Edicts Diagram | Edicts and constitutional changes shown in one diagram (see Constitution and Edicts) |
The second part of the first developer log, published in May 2026, makes the Council comparison explicit: "With the Council, we have replaced the ultimatums that kept popping up in Tropico 6." The stated aim is that gameplay is no longer interrupted by those pop-ups.
Kalypso acknowledged the interest in multiplayer throughout the series when it announced in May 2026 that the mode would come as a free update after launch rather than at release.
