Sipan is the title borne by the protagonist and sole playable character of Swords of Legends. Sipan is an office of the Underworld, not a personal name. The character who holds it is dead yet reborn, returned to the mortal world to carry out the duties of the netherworld among the living.
Sipan's task comes from the Judge of King Yama: to find souls that have lost their way, hear out the stories that keep them bound to the world, cut those worldly ties, and ferry each soul across the sea of birth and death. This role frames both the narrative and the way Sipan fights, since judging and guiding the dead is inseparable from the powers the hero wields.
As an Arbiter, Sipan can unleash mystical techniques, summon spirit creatures, and call on a wide arsenal of weapons that range from the swords of the living to the artifacts of the dead. Sipan can also capture the souls of certain defeated foes and bring them into battle through the Spirit Companion System.
Official material is consistent that Sipan is a post rather than a personal name. The English announcement material says players take on the title of Si Pan, an Underworld Enforcer, and the studio's own English release describes the player as walking again as a Sipan, an Arbiter of the Underworld. In an interview about the game the team traced the office to Yanluo, Lord of Yama, who is said to have established a position called the Sipan, Judge and Arbiter of Life and Death.
Chinese-language material uses the same construction. The role is written 地界司判, the Sipan of the Underworld, and the studio addresses its audience as 司判大人, roughly "esteemed Sipan", the way a reader might be addressed by an in-world honorific. The character's own given name has not been revealed in any public build or document, and a writer who played the July 2026 hands-on build reported that the protagonist is unnamed there.

The team has framed the setting as three realms: Heaven, the mortal world, and the Underworld. Earlier stories in the studio's lineage were set mostly in the first two, and this entry is the one that turns toward the Underworld, which is why the player character is an officer of that realm rather than a wandering hero of the mortal one. The duties attached to the office are set out under The Underworld and the Judge of King Yama.

The developers compare Sipan’s role to a ferryman of souls in Greek mythology, a figure appointed by Yama to guide back spirits who refuse to move on. The hero is someone who has been reborn, and that station as an emissary moving between the living and the dead is what lets Sipan wield the netherworld relics that prove decisive against the game’s bosses.
Sipan’s station grants access to a broad fighting kit drawn from three pillars. The hero carries well over a dozen weapon classes, calls on divine artifacts such as a guarding umbrella and a Bagua Mirror, and summons captured souls through the companion system. Cycling between these and combining them is the heart of how Sipan fights, detailed under Combat, and tested against the foes collected under Bosses.
Sipan's fighting options are detailed under Combat, and the duties tied to the role are explored in The Underworld and the Judge of King Yama.
