Early Access and development roadmap
Subnautica 2 is following an Early Access development model, allowing players to purchase and play the game while it is still in active development. This approach was also used for the original Subnautica, which spent over two years in Early Access before its full release in January 2018. Unknown Worlds Entertainment has committed to an open development process with regular updates and community engagement throughout the Early Access period.
Announcement and initial timeline
Subnautica 2 was officially announced on October 17, 2024 during the Xbox Partner Showcase event. The reveal included a cinematic trailer that introduced Planet Zezura, the multiplayer co-op feature, and the DNA adaptation system. At the time of announcement, Early Access was planned for 2025 on PC and Xbox Series X|S.
Delay to 2026
The Early Access launch was subsequently delayed from 2025 to 2026. The delay came after internal community playtests where the development team gathered feedback from selected players. According to the developers, feedback on the environment, creatures, and story was positive, but the team identified areas that needed additional work to meet their quality standards.
The decision to delay was framed as a quality-driven choice rather than a response to technical problems. The team stated that they wanted to ensure the Early Access launch provided a strong first impression and a solid foundation for the years of development that would follow.

Early Access duration
The projected Early Access period is 2 to 3 years. The delay from 2025 to 2026 is not expected to shorten this window, meaning the full release is currently estimated around 2027 to 2028. This timeline is consistent with the original Subnautica, which spent approximately 2.5 years in Early Access (December 2014 to January 2018).
Launch content
The Early Access launch is planned to include a substantial initial content offering:
Multiplayer co-op: The 1-4 player online co-op will be available from the start of Early Access.
Several biomes: Multiple biomes will be explorable at launch, though not the full set planned for the complete game.
Creatures: A roster of alien fauna inhabiting the available biomes.
Craftables: Tools, equipment, and base building options.
Some narrative: Portions of the story involving the ship AI and the mystery of the Zezura mission.
Post-launch Early Access updates
After the initial launch, Unknown Worlds plans to release regular content updates throughout the Early Access period. Confirmed update categories include:
New biomes and expanded world areas
Vehicle upgrades and new vehicle types
Additional tools and equipment
Expanded story content and narrative progression
New creature species, including leviathan-class organisms
Anthony Gallegos, who served as Design Lead before the 2025 leadership changes, stated: "You'll be there when we first add new vehicles, craftables, biomes, and leviathans." This confirms that major new content, including new leviathan-class creatures, will be introduced during the Early Access window rather than being held for the full release.
Monetization
Subnautica 2 follows a traditional premium game model with no live-service monetization elements. The developers have explicitly confirmed:
No subscriptions: The game does not require any ongoing subscription fee.
No loot boxes: There are no randomized paid reward mechanics.
No battle passes: There is no seasonal pass or battle pass system.
No microtransactions: There are no in-game purchases beyond the initial game purchase.
The game is a single purchase. This is consistent with the monetization approach of the original Subnautica and Below Zero, neither of which included any post-purchase monetization.
Open development and community engagement
Throughout the Early Access period, Unknown Worlds plans to maintain an open development process. This includes:
Regular dev vlogs documenting the development process and showcasing new content.
Community feedback channels for Early Access players to report bugs, suggest features, and discuss the game.
Transparent communication about development progress, challenges, and upcoming content.
This approach mirrors the development of the original Subnautica, where the Early Access community played a significant role in shaping the final product through feedback and bug reporting.
Xbox Game Pass
Subnautica 2 will be available on Xbox Game Pass on day one as a Game Preview title (Microsoft's equivalent of Early Access). This means Xbox Game Pass subscribers can play the game during Early Access at no additional cost beyond their subscription. The arrangement was announced alongside the game's reveal at the Xbox Partner Showcase, reflecting the partnership between KRAFTON (the game's publisher) and Microsoft.
