Streets of Rogue 2 lets players pick from a roster of character classes, each with its own traits and playstyle, or build a custom character. Classes shape how a run plays out, from combat-focused fighters to stealthy infiltrators to crafters and talkers. The developer has confirmed that not every class will be available the moment the game enters Early Access; playable characters are intended to be added gradually throughout the Early Access development phase. The custom character and trait options are described in Traits and Custom Characters.
Confirmed Classes
The following classes have been shown with described playstyles. Some are returning from the original Streets of Rogue, and some are new to the sequel.
Class | Status | Playstyle |
|---|---|---|
Soldier | Returning | A combat-oriented class built around ranged weaponry, with the developer noting increased accuracy; described as using military weapons and explosives to push through enemies and objectives. |
Cultist | New | A ranged class that wields elemental damage weaponry to attack from afar, themed around a large following and numerous churches. |
Farmer | New | A crafting and construction class that grows crops, gathers resources, and builds structures and workbenches to gain power in the world. |
Gorilla | Returning | A melee bruiser that deals heavy close-range damage and can smash through doors, walls, and windows; cannot understand human language but can communicate with other apes. |
Thief | Returning | A stealth class that uses gadgets and abilities to slip through locked doors and steal valuable items. |
Hacker | Returning | A tech-focused class that breaks into electronics and vehicles; in the sequel the developer has said weaker classes like this are less able to simply win fights, encouraging players to use their specialty rather than brute force. |
Cop | Returning | An authority figure who uses weapons and tools to arrest or neutralize hostiles and build reputation with the law. |
Additional Announced Classes
Beyond the classes above, the developer has named a wider set of classes planned for the game during a classes overview. These were presented as part of the roster the game is building toward rather than a confirmed launch lineup, and the developer noted more are intended to come as development continues. Announced names include the following.
Robot
Banker
Alien
Detective
Scientist
Bartender
Mobster
Comedian
Firefighter
Shopkeeper
Mech Pilot
Chef
Cannibal
Assassin
Vampire
Courier
Politician
Wrestler
Doctor
Gangster
The developer has also described a Ranger archetype tied to the game's wildlife, functioning as a kind of beastmaster able to tame, ride, and fight alongside animals. That role is covered in Animals and Wildlife.
Professions and Role-Playing
The developer has said class identity matters more in the sequel than in the first game. Where some classes in the original could fall back on direct combat when needed, weaker characters in Streets of Rogue 2 are intended to be much less viable in a straight fight, pushing players to lean into their class's strengths. At the same time, the game is meant to offer more varied ways to improve a character's skills, including new abilities acquired through augmentation booths. This is part of a broader emphasis on role-playing your chosen profession. Related progression scaling is described in The World Tier System.
