Makoto Daito, also called Mako, is the protagonist of STRANGER THAN HEAVEN. He is portrayed by Yu Shirota. Over the game's fifty-year span he grows from an orphaned street child into a master performer and a force in the criminal underworld.

Background

Makoto is born in San Francisco to an American father and a Japanese mother. Both parents die during his childhood, his mother amid the prejudice they face in America. Seeking belonging, Makoto stows away on a ship to Japan, only to feel like an outsider there as well.

Journey

Alongside his lifelong companion Yu Shinjo, Makoto works toward building a place where people like them will be accepted. In the 1929 chapter set in Kure he becomes known as the Red Oni. He is described as impulsive and confident, gifted in music composition, fighting, and showmanship.

Abilities

Makoto's talents span the game's two pillars. In Combat he is a ferocious brawler, while in performance he composes original music and commands the stage. His fighting style evolves as he ages across the decades.
