Role
Yu appears across all five eras of the story. He has often been described as sharing Makoto's mixed heritage, though no official source has confirmed that detail for him. He is described as a calculating realist, a friend and rival whose level head balances Makoto's impulsiveness. The two share the dream of creating a place where people like them can belong.
Across the Eras
Yu is one of only two characters confirmed to appear in every chapter of the fifty-year story, alongside Makoto himself. The saga moves from Kokura in 1915 to Kure in 1929, Minami in Osaka in 1943, Atami in 1951 and Shinjuku in Tokyo in 1965, and Yu is present throughout. That span makes him the one constant presence besides the protagonist, and the pair are introduced together as men with nowhere to go who set out to build a place to belong.
Partnership
Yu also serves as Makoto's partner in the entertainment venture, helping to build and run their shows. For the wider cast, see Characters.
The venture is the second of the game's two pillars: Makoto rises from street performer to showman and producer, scouting talent, arranging bands, designing setlists and staging productions, with Yu alongside him in running the business. He is listed second on the game's cast, immediately after Makoto.
