The most notable use of Pickled Cabbage is as a key ingredient in Sauerkraut Fish, a high-tier dish that restores 147 stamina and sells for 458 coins. This makes Pickled Cabbage far more valuable as a cooking component than as a standalone food item. Players who invest in setting up a reliable pickling workflow unlock access to one of the game's best mid-tier recipes.

Pickling is a time-based process that requires planning ahead. Each batch takes approximately 15 in-game hours to complete, so keeping your Pickling Jar loaded with ingredients ensures you always have a supply ready when you need it.

How to Make Pickled Cabbage

Pickled Cabbage is produced at the Pickling Jar, a crafting station that combines vegetables with Salt Brick to create pickled items over time. The recipe is straightforward but requires you to have both the station and the right ingredients ready.

Recipe

To start a batch, interact with the Pickling Jar and place 2 Cabbage and 2 Salt Brick into the input slots. The jar will begin processing automatically, and the Pickled Cabbage will be ready to collect after roughly 15 in-game hours. You can leave the jar running while you go about your other daily tasks.

Unlocking the Pickling Jar

The Pickling Jar blueprint is sold at the Happiness Seed Shop for 2,000 coins. It requires the Intermediate Farmer certification to purchase, which means you need to have progressed past the Apprentice Farmer tier before the blueprint becomes available. Check the second page of the shop inventory, as the Pickling Jar can be easy to miss among the other items.

Once purchased, the Pickling Jar is crafted at the Worktable and placed on your homestead. You can build multiple Pickling Jars to run several batches in parallel, which is especially helpful if you plan to pickle vegetables in bulk for cooking or selling.

Ingredient Sourcing

Cabbage

Cabbage is a vegetable crop that grows during Summer and Autumn. Cabbage Seeds cost 65 coins each at the Happiness Seed Shop and are available at the Apprentice Farmer tier. Each plant takes approximately 1.8 days to mature and yields 4 Cabbage per harvest. Since you need 2 Cabbage per batch of Pickled Cabbage, a single harvest from one Cabbage plant provides enough for two pickling batches.

Cabbage is one of the more cost-effective crops to grow for pickling. The seeds are cheap, the growth time is short, and the yield is generous. Dedicate a small section of your farm to Cabbage during Summer and Autumn, and you will have more than enough to keep your Pickling Jars running continuously.

Salt Brick

Salt Brick is a gathered resource found in certain areas of the island. It can be collected from mineral deposits or obtained through other means depending on your progression. Salt Brick is used directly in the Pickling Jar recipe without needing further processing for pickling purposes.

Note that Salt Brick is also used at the Charcoal Kiln to produce Fine Salt (by combining Salt Brick with Fiber), which is a different ingredient used in many cooking recipes. Make sure you keep separate stockpiles of Salt Brick for pickling and for Salt production, since both uses compete for the same resource.

Uses in Cooking

Pickled Cabbage's primary value as a cooking ingredient lies in its role in Sauerkraut Fish, one of the stronger mid-tier dishes in the game. While Pickled Cabbage can be consumed on its own, its stamina recovery as a standalone item is modest compared to the powerful meals it enables.

Sauerkraut Fish is a Rarity III dish purchased from the Aureleaf Kitchen for 580 coins. It is cooked using the Saucepan method on a Gas Stove or Campfire, and takes 2 minutes 26 seconds to prepare. The dish restores 147 stamina and sells for 458 coins, making it one of the best mid-tier recipes in terms of both energy recovery and profit.

Because Sauerkraut Fish requires only 1 Pickled Cabbage per cook, a single pickling batch goes a long way. If you set up your Pickling Jar to run overnight, you will have enough Pickled Cabbage to cook multiple batches of Sauerkraut Fish throughout the week.

Profitability

The Pickling Jar offers one of the highest value multipliers among all processing stations in the game, ranging from approximately 1.85x to 2.78x depending on the vegetable being pickled. This means that converting raw Cabbage (which sells for 22 coins each) into Pickled Cabbage consistently yields a better return than selling the raw crop, even after accounting for the Salt Brick cost.

However, the real profit comes from using Pickled Cabbage as an ingredient rather than selling it directly. A single Pickled Cabbage costs 2 Cabbage (44 coins worth of raw crop) and 2 Salt Brick, but it contributes to a Sauerkraut Fish that sells for 458 coins. The value added by the pickling step far exceeds what you would earn by selling Pickled Cabbage on its own.

Selling Sauerkraut Fish to the Merchant Ship on Monday at the 200% bonus price brings the value up to 916 coins per dish. Batch-cooking Sauerkraut Fish throughout the week and saving them for the Monday Merchant Ship visit is one of the most efficient mid-game money-making strategies.

NPC Gift Preferences

Pickled Cabbage can be given as a gift to NPCs. Most characters have a neutral or positive reaction to pickled items, but there are a few notable exceptions.

Pickled Cabbage falls into the general "Liked" category for most NPCs, meaning it is a safe and easy gift when you do not have a character's specific favorite item on hand. However, avoid giving it to Aurelis, who hates pickled items. If you are looking for a universally appreciated food gift with higher affection gains, consider cooking the Pickled Cabbage into Sauerkraut Fish instead, since cooked dishes often have more targeted loved reactions from specific NPCs.

• Cabbage grows during Summer and Autumn, which gives you two full seasons of availability. Plant a dedicated Cabbage patch each season and store the harvest for year-round pickling.
