Created Gear Smith article with full crafting guide
The Gear Smith is a timed processing station in Starsand Island that produces mechanical components such as Gears, Springs, and Bearings. These precision parts are essential for mid-to-late game crafting, as many advanced machines, vehicles, and tools require mechanical components in their recipes. Without a Gear Smith, players cannot progress into higher-tier crafting or build motorized transportation.
Like other timed processing stations, the Gear Smith operates automatically once you queue a recipe. You can place multiple Gear Smiths on your property to run several jobs in parallel, which becomes important when you need large quantities of Gears for vehicle construction or advanced machine upgrades.
The Gear Smith blueprint becomes available as you progress through the Crafting profession. It is part of the Intermediate Crafter tier, which means you need to invest Starsand Points into the Crafting skill tree via the Workpedia app before you can purchase the blueprint.
Once the prerequisite profession rank is met, the Gear Smith blueprint can be purchased from Zerine's General Store. Zerine stocks blueprints for most crafting stations, and the Gear Smith is no exception. Visit her shop, buy the blueprint, and then craft the station at your Worktable.
After purchasing the blueprint, you need to gather materials and craft the Gear Smith at your Worktable. The recipe requires a combination of metal ingots and processed wood.
Material | Details |
|---|---|
Smelted from Iron Ore at the Furnace. Iron is found in the mine and various rocky outcrops across the island. | |
Smelted from Copper Ore at the Furnace. Copper deposits are commonly found in the mine. | |
Processed from Hardwood Logs at the Cutter. Hardwood trees grow in forested areas of the island. |
Make sure you have a Furnace running to smelt ores and a Cutter to process wood before attempting to build the Gear Smith. Having multiple Furnaces speeds up ingot production significantly.
The Gear Smith produces several mechanical components, each used in different advanced recipes throughout the game.
Product | Primary Uses | Processing Time |
|---|---|---|
Gears | Vehicles, advanced machines, mechanical tools. Gears are the most commonly needed mechanical part. | Moderate |
Springs | Vehicle suspension, certain tools, and specialized equipment. Springs add flexibility and shock absorption to builds. | Moderate |
Bearings | Wheels, rotating components, and high-tier machines. Bearings reduce friction in moving parts. | Moderate to Long |
Each product requires a combination of metal ingots as input. Gears typically need Iron Ingots, while Springs and Bearings may also require Copper Ingots. Check the in-game recipe list for exact quantities, as these can change with game updates.
The Gear Smith is a critical station for anyone pursuing vehicle construction. Nearly every vehicle recipe in the game requires multiple Gears, and some also need Springs or Bearings. Vehicles range from simple carts to motorized boats and the Freewind Jet, all of which depend on mechanical parts from this station.
If you plan to build vehicles, it is wise to set up your Gear Smith early in the Intermediate Crafter phase and begin stockpiling Gears. Vehicle recipes often require a surprising number of mechanical components, and running out mid-build means waiting for more processing time.
Like other crafting stations, the Gear Smith can be upgraded to higher tiers as you progress further in the Crafting profession. Upgraded versions process materials faster and may unlock additional recipes. Higher-tier stations include all recipes from the tier below, so upgrading never removes access to earlier products. Upgrading a station in place preserves its position on your property; you do not need to pick it up and re-place it.
Stockpile ingots early. Keep a continuous supply of Iron and Copper Ingots smelting in your Furnace. The Gear Smith consumes metal ingots quickly when you are crafting in bulk.
Build multiple Gear Smiths. Since this is a timed processing station, having two or three running simultaneously is the fastest way to accumulate mechanical parts for big projects.
Plan ahead for vehicles. Before starting a vehicle build, check the recipe to see how many Gears, Springs, and Bearings you need. Start production a few in-game days in advance.
Pair with the Furnace and Cutter. The Gear Smith depends on processed materials from other stations. Set up an efficient production chain: mine ore, smelt at the Furnace, then feed ingots into the Gear Smith.
Check Zerine's stock. If you need the blueprint but have not yet reached the required Crafter rank, focus on completing crafting tasks to earn Starsand Points and level up your Crafting profession.
