Added the Hutt debt that drives the company to take the contract
Zero Company is the name of the outfit Hawks builds and leads. It is not part of any official military. Instead it is a collection of professionals for hire, recruited from every corner of the galaxy and bound together by a single contract: stop an emerging threat before it spreads. Bit Reactor describes the outfit as specialising in covert investigations and tactical operations, which is the pairing the Galaxy Map and Tactical Mission layers are built around. Its members are called Operators.

The company is built from people who do not belong anywhere else. A clone who has slipped his leash, a Mandalorian chasing a vendetta, a Padawan cut loose from the Jedi Order, a sniper with a grudge against the Republic, and the custom mercenaries you create yourself. They hold different beliefs and rarely agree, and managing those frictions is part of the job. See Companions and Squadmates for the full roster.
The roster mixes two kinds of members. Authored Operators arrive with fixed backstories, personalities, and their own unique classes that no one else can use, joining as the story unfolds. Custom Operators are mercenaries you design from scratch at the Den, assigning their species, look, name, and Specialization. Together they fill out a squad you deploy a handful at a time.
Zero Company takes the job because it needs the money. The squad is working its way out of a debt owed to a Hutt family, which is what puts a group with no official standing in reach of a contract this size. Early missions bring the company into contact with Gorga the Hutt and turn up references to the Black Sun Syndicate. The operation pits them against the Infinite Coil, a galaxy-threatening cult tied to the Separatist cause, and the deeper the company digs, the higher the stakes climb. The work runs out of the Den, the company's hidden base on the Ring of Kafrene, where Operators are hired, trained, and sent out across the galaxy aboard the Caisson.
What the Coil is doing has since been stated plainly: it intends to spread a deadly shadow plague across the galaxy. The company was formed by Hawks after leaving the Republic in disgrace, so the people chasing that threat are the ones with the least official backing to do it. The work ranges across the planets of both mission layers.
