Ashley

Overview

Ashley is the Detective's assistant in Silver Palace, hired during the first act of the story shown in the closed beta builds. She turns up at the office in Silvernia shortly after the Detective returns and starts taking contracts again, applies for the post herself, and stays through the middle of the story before leaving it under suspicion.

Lorin, Chief Inspector of the River Constabulary, had lined up three candidates for the job, and his own picks did not survive the interviews: one turned out to be an imposter. Ashley was not among them. She had read about the vacancy, came to the office on her own, and had already tidied the place before she introduced herself.

The Assistant Interview

The interview plays as an investigation scene. Before any questions, the Detective can look Ashley over, and each detail returns a reading.

Lorin reads the same picture more bluntly: she does not look like a resident of High Peers. The questions that follow test literacy and speed. Ashley is lettered and has written for other people. Asked how she would handle a hundred-page dossier with an hour left before leaving for a scene, she works it out aloud: four to five hundred words a minute, roughly three hundred words to a page, so an hour is just enough to skim a hundred pages, and nothing can be skipped because which evidence matters is not known until the truth is out. She then admits she had guessed the question, since the job is pre-investigation, recording during the investigation and organising the material afterwards, so a question about gathering data was the likely one. Lorin's verdict once she leaves: not just a poor girl from the Gravelkin, and reliable.

The Wage She Asked For

Asked what she expects to be paid, Ashley answers: "None required. I don't want money. In exchange, I hope you'll help me unravel a mystery." The reason comes out over the meal that follows. She had wanted to commission the Detective and could not afford the fee, and worked out that a wage she never drew would cover it.

The case she brings is the Mystery of the Stolen Silver. A rich man kept a hoard of silver coins in a strong safe with a single key, which he kept by his pillow and never used. When his business went bad and he opened the safe to auction the hoard, only shavings were left. No servant had taken the key, no neighbour had sold silver, and the police found no lead. What Ashley hands over is the safe, a key that was never used, and the missing coins.

The Detective formally employs her the next day, on the way to a scene. Lorin's standing condition on the case work is that the Detective operates in a team of two.

Background

Ashley had recently graduated and had no work history when she applied. She had read through the Detective's better-known cases beforehand and describes herself as an admirer of the work, framing it as fighting to reveal the truth and get justice for ordinary people. She is Gravelkin, and in the interview scene both her clothes and her hands read that way before she says a word about it.

What She Knows About the City

Ashley carries much of the story's political exposition. She explains the street parade as a celebration of Queen Feliana's formal reign. She sets out who holds the economy: minting and the founts of Silverium are still in the hands of the Royal Families and the aristocracy, while the United Mining Industry has taken a growing share of the market since it began mass-producing Reactors, enough to make it a serious rival to the old nobility. She hedges every time she does it, saying she only knows what she reads in the papers.

Around the Office

Grimm turns up in the middle of the hiring, camera first, and needles her. He tells her what became of the Detective's previous assistant, who went down with the airship, and Ashley cuts him off for making fun of the dead. Her working partner at the office is Alf, MISS Maid No. 49, who covers combat and field support while Ashley handles pre-investigation, note-taking and the case paperwork.

Departure

Ashley leaves the story in Act III. The achievement tied to Act III, Scene III, "Shattered Bonds", is called Blue Eryngos Beyond Reach, and its text describes the scene: daytime at the Detective's office, Ashley falls under suspicion and says her goodbyes.

Appearances

Ashley appears in the trailer released in August 2026, one of the characters glimpsed while the female Detective works through a neighbourhood, alongside Gratia and Red Rose. That is the first time she has been named in promotional material rather than only inside a beta build.

Playable Status

No official character profile has been published under Ashley's name, and she has not appeared in a sign-in reward track or on a named banner under it in either the Monotype Beta or the Dichotomy Beta. Whether she becomes playable has not been announced.

Beta players have also drawn a line between Ashley and one of the fairy-tale-motif characters in the cast. The material available now does not settle that question in either direction, so the connection is best treated as open rather than as established or as ruled out.

Open Questions

Her family circumstances, what she was doing before she graduated, and the answer to her own mystery are all still open when the beta story ends. So is what she falls under suspicion of in Act III, and whether she returns after it.
