Gamescom 2026 Demo

Capitalised the title for consistency with other event pages and dated the chapter-count statement
The first build of Showa American Story that the public could play ran at gamescom 2026 in Cologne, from 26 to 30 August 2026, at Hall 6.1, Stand A-30. The booth held 42 demo stations, each session lasted 30 minutes, and the demo was open to players aged 18 and over.
The showing was announced ahead of the event. On 19 August 2026 the studio posted a store announcement saying that the game remained in active development, its first store announcement since December 2023. A new in-game trailer then debuted at gamescom Opening Night Live, carrying a note that all footage was recorded from the actual game and that the current version is still in development and does not represent the game's final quality. By the studio's own count, 4,572 people played the demo across the show. The same build was played at an offline preview event in China at around the same time.
Players chose one of four slices, drawn from Chapters 3 and 4 of the main story. Each was described by the studio in its own terms.
Slice | Chapter | Content |
|---|---|---|
Story and Combat | Chapter 3, first segment | In search of Aya, Chigusa Choko travels to Mount Neo Yokohama to seek out the all-knowing Granny Peace, and finds that a group of the Warriors bandits has beaten her there. A linear section covering story progression and core Combat. |
Rest and Progression | RV camp | Choko returns to her RV, the Guren Express, to develop herself through Daily Activities and to explore the vehicle's interior customisation and the systems attached to it. |
Exploration | Chapter 3, second segment | The Foothill Shopping District at the base of Mount Neo Yokohama has returned to its former bustle. To continue toward the summit, Choko must first obtain a pass. An open-ended section. |
Boss Battle | Chapter 4 | Chasing the mysterious Man in Black, Choko arrives at the Golden Gate Bridge for a battle beneath the moonlight. |
That line-up confirms the game has at least four numbered chapters. It says nothing about how many there are in total, and as of September 2026 no total has been announced.
The developers attached an explicit caveat to the build, and it governs everything written anywhere about it. Certain narrative content was omitted and some features were temporarily disabled. Item availability and drop distribution, as well as certain game parameters, were adjusted for the demo and may differ from the final release. The demo's visual presentation, control feel, system details and overall quality are not representative of the final product.
No numbers taken from the build are recorded here: drop rates, item counts, damage and health values, currency and prices were all explicitly adjusted for the show. It is also why there is no verdict here on how the game felt to play, since the developers disclaimed the control feel themselves. Anything known only from this build is marked as demo-build detail wherever it appears.
Two of the game's three difficulty levels were selectable at the booth. The build ran with Japanese voice and a choice of Japanese, English or Chinese text, matching the Voice Cast announced at the same show.
A giveaway pack was offered at the stand containing a show bag, a commemorative ticket stub, and a lenticular fan produced as a collaboration with the manga artist Bkub Okawa. The fan was a merchandise item; no in-game collaboration has been announced off the back of it.
As of September 2026 there is no downloadable or storefront demo. The gamescom build was on-site only and has not been released anywhere since. Release information is on Release and Platforms, and the production leading up to the show is covered on Development History.
