Overview
Huangxing is a boss in Phantom Blade Zero who was prominently featured at Gamescom 2024 as a highlight encounter in the playable demo. He is a towering warrior wearing a distinctive pyramid-shaped helmet and wielding a ball-and-chain flail. Huangxing became one of the most discussed bosses after the event due to his instant-kill grab attack that caught many first-time players off guard.
Appearance
Huangxing wears heavy armor dominated by a geometric, pyramid-shaped helmet that obscures his face entirely. The helmet gives him an almost abstract, inhuman silhouette. His flail is a spiked metal ball connected to a long chain, which he swings with enough force to crack stone and shatter the arena's surroundings.
Combat behavior
Huangxing's fighting style revolves around his flail's reach and the momentum of his swings. He can attack from much farther away than most bosses, and his strikes have wide arcs that make lateral dodging less effective than distance-based positioning.
Item | Description |
|---|---|
Wide flail sweeps | horizontal swings that cover nearly 360 degrees around him |
Overhead slam | raises the flail high and brings it down with explosive impact |
Chain extension | releases extra chain length for attacks that reach across the entire arena |
Spinning charge | whirls the flail above his head while advancing, creating a moving danger zone |
Instant-kill grab
Huangxing's signature move is a grab attack that, if it connects, results in an instant kill regardless of the player's remaining health. The grab is telegraphed by a distinct red flash and a brief pause in his movement. Players who recognize the tell have a narrow window to dodge or use Ghostep to escape. At Gamescom, this move was responsible for most player deaths and became a talking point in post-demo discussions.
The grab cannot be blocked or parried. The only valid responses are evasion or Ghostep. S-GAME designed this move to teach players that not every attack can be answered with a parry, reinforcing the importance of reading boss-specific tells.
Strategy
Maintain medium range. Too close and his flail's arc becomes difficult to read; too far and his chain extension catches you. The safest punish windows come after his overhead slam, which has the longest recovery animation. When you see the red flash for his grab, dodge laterally immediately without waiting to confirm the animation.
Use weapon switching aggressively in this fight. His long recovery windows after heavy attacks give enough time for a full weapon swap and follow-up combo while restoring Sha-Chi in the process.
