Persona 4 Revival is set in Inaba, a quiet rural town in Japan. The story follows a high school transfer student who arrives at the start of a new school year and quickly becomes entangled in events that will define the year ahead. The official description calls the experience an unforgettable year shared with new friends. Because this is a pre-release game, the details below reflect the publisher's official description; further story details have not been confirmed by Atlus. For broader project context see Persona 4 Revival and Gameplay Overview.

The Town of Inaba
Inaba is the rural Japanese town at the heart of Persona 4 Revival. The official Inaba tour and the reveal trailers confirmed several returning locations, including the Central Shopping District, the Junes department store, the Samegawa Flood Plain, Shichiri Beach, the Amagi Inn, the Inaba Municipal Hospital, and the Yaso-Inaba area around the train station. Early footage also showed a high school classroom. The world of Inaba is described as rebuilt with revamped, modern graphics.
The Central Mystery
The story revolves around a series of killings in Inaba and a rumored television channel that appears only on rainy nights. Investigation of both mysteries draws the protagonist and a group of companions into another world, a separate realm lurking beyond ordinary reality. The official synopsis frames the game's tone as heartwarming days of adolescence tinged with intrigue and the occult.
Personas and Shadows
As characters delve deeper into the mystery, they awaken Personas, described officially as the manifestation of their inner strength. These Personas are their primary means of fighting in the other world. The enemies encountered there are called Shadows. The relationship between a character's personal growth and the power of their Persona is a core element of the game's identity.
Protagonist and Party
Ahead of launch, Atlus and Xbox published an official tour of Inaba that confirmed several returning characters appear in the remake: the silent protagonist, his classmates Yosuke Hanamura, Chie Satonaka, and Yukiko Amagi, his guardian and local detective Ryotaro Dojima and Dojima's young daughter Nanako, and Marie, the character introduced in the expanded Golden version. The protagonist's canonical name and the full party roster have not been formally listed for Revival, and the English voice cast has been recast in primary roles, with the complete lineup still unrevealed. Deeper character details are expected at the June 18, 2026 broadcast. The confirmed performers are gathered on the Voice Cast page.
New and Expanded Content
Because Persona 4 Revival is built on the expanded version of the game, it carries forward content that was not part of the 2008 release and adds new material on top. The clearest example is Marie, who has her own bond to pursue and an associated extra dungeon, the Hollow Forest, that is tied to her story. Atlus has also confirmed that the remake includes the additional Social Links introduced in the expanded version, naming Marie and the detective Tohru Adachi among them.
Presentation has been broadened as well. The remake keeps the expanded version’s extra animated scenes, such as the ski trip, and adds further animated sequences that were previously only described in text, including the summer festival. Side characters who had no portrait before, such as the teacher nicknamed for the pharaoh, now have full character art. The expanded ending and epilogue introduced after the original release are also part of the remake. The remake’s animated cutscenes are produced by the animation studio MAPPA.
A Retelling
The publisher describes Persona 4 Revival as a retelling of Persona 4, built on the expanded content of Persona 4 Golden rather than only the 2008 original; the appearance of Marie, a Golden-exclusive character, reflects that. Producer Kazuhisa Wada has stated that the goal is to create an experience enjoyable in a new and different way, rather than simply expanding the original's existing content. The exact scope of story changes, new scenes, expanded endings, or additional Social Links has not been announced.
