Detailed guide to the modular van building system
The building system in Outbound allows players to transform the camper van from an empty shell into a personalized mobile home. The system is fully modular — players place, rotate, and connect building components in a grid-based layout that covers both the van's interior cabin and its exterior roof space. Building is one of the game's primary creative outlets, alongside crafting and exploration.
The van's interior provides a protected workspace and living area. Players can place functional items like stoves, storage containers, research stations, and garden beds alongside decorative elements such as curtains, rugs, shelving, and candles. The interior layout affects daily life — a well-organized workspace speeds up crafting, while cozy personal touches contribute to the game's atmosphere.
The van's roof and exterior walls serve as additional building space. Energy modules like solar panels and wind turbines are typically mounted on the roof for optimal exposure. Players can also build upward, adding multi-level platforms and structures on top of the van to dramatically expand available space.
The signature innovation of Outbound's building system is the fold-away mechanic. When the player enters driving mode, all built structures collapse compactly against the van's frame, reducing the vehicle's profile for travel. Upon parking at a new campsite, structures automatically unfold to their full configuration. This means players never have to dismantle their base to move — the entire home travels with them.
Stoves and Food Processors — Cook meals and process ingredients
Storage Containers — Organize and store resources and crafted items
Workstations — Crafting and refining stations for production
Garden Beds — Grow crops and mushrooms directly on the van
Energy Modules — Solar, wind, water, and biomass generators
Outbound offers a wide selection of decorative items for personalizing the van. Exterior paint changes the van's color scheme. Interior decorations include curtains, candles, picture frames, rugs, potted plants, and various furniture styles. Decorative lighting illuminates automatically at night, adding ambiance to the campsite.
In multiplayer mode, all players share the same van and can build collaboratively. Changes made by one player appear in real time for all others, enabling coordinated design efforts where one player handles the workshop layout while another focuses on the living quarters.
