Genma

Expanded Genma with confirmed roster, Malice tie-in, Dokyo's experiments
The Genma are Onimusha: Way of the Sword's primary enemy type. Capcom describes them as monstrosities from the underworld, arriving in Edo-era Kyoto on the tide of Malice.
Slaying Genma is the Oni Gauntlet's reason for existing. Every combat system in the game, from the Souls loop to Break Issen and the Oni Armaments, is designed around the Genma as the main threat Musashi has to clear from the city.
Capcom has publicly named and shown several specific Genma variants:
Enemy | Summary |
|---|---|
A ferocious, chimeric beast that harnesses the power of lightning. | |
Humans warped by parasitic Genma; on death, they create poisonous clouds of Malice. | |
A grotesque mass of interwoven human faces with far-reaching tentacles. | |
A serpentine Genma with spikes along its spine that whirls into combat at high speed. |
Generic Genma rank-and-file enemies appear across every public trailer as the baseline threat filling out encounters between the named variants.
The sinister figure Dokyo runs a hidden underground laboratory beneath Kyoto where he actively creates new Genma. His experiments are the public-facing origin point for the variants Capcom has shown so far, which ties the Genma threat to a specific human source in the story rather than leaving them as an undifferentiated demonic tide.
Genma do not only drop souls; they can also absorb them. Orbs left on the battlefield are fair game for any Genma that reaches them first, which turns soul scatter into a small race and makes cleanup a practical rather than cosmetic part of every fight.
