Enemies

Added the original Chinese and Japanese names for all four of the February 2026 enemies, a section on the Ghosts of Cangwu faction and the scout rank within it, and a note on enemy soldiers garrisoned on destructible watchtowers
Enemies in Of Peaks and Tides draw from East Asian mythology and the broken landscape of Everland. CyancookGames designs encounters around terrain, physics, and player creativity rather than a stat treadmill: bosses reshape the battlefield, common enemies punish poor positioning, and almost every fight rewards using the environment and crafted tools over brute force.
Four enemies were formally revealed in February 2026, joining the demo enemies first shown at the Gamescom 2025 hands-on. The bestiary below combines confirmed entries from those reveals and the playable demo. Additional creatures appear in trailers and concept art but are not yet officially named.
Enemy | Class | Signature Behavior | Counterplay Hint |
|---|---|---|---|
Multi-phase boss | Generates powerful wind currents that launch players into the air; reshapes the battlefield between phases | Manage positioning and air control over raw damage output | |
Elite | Towering ape wielding a colossal tree-trunk club; consumes and hurls fruits as projectiles | Shoot, steal, or deflect the fruit it eats or throws to turn its own kit against it | |
Elite | Agile war-bow archer with acrobatic melee and enchanted weapons | Constantly adjust spacing and timing; do not stand still | |
Common | Severs and hurls its razor-edged tail as both weapon and escape tool | Reactive enemy that rewards awareness and positioning over heavy attacks |
The Japanese-language version of the February 2026 enemy reveal publishes the original Chinese characters for all four enemies, which the English release does not. Two of the four tie back to named things elsewhere in the world, and one of them turns out to name a faction rather than a creature.
Enemy | Original name | Note |
|---|---|---|
穷奇, written 窮奇 in traditional characters | A beast from the same early Chinese compendium the rest of the bestiary draws on. | |
朱厌, presented as 白猿「朱厭」 | 白猿 means white ape, so the English name renders what the Chinese presentation already says rather than adding to it. | |
蒼梧の鬼「斥候」 in the Japanese release, 苍梧之鬼「斥候」 in simplified Chinese | 苍梧 is the Chinese name of Lushland. 苍梧之鬼 is a faction; 斥候 is the scout rank inside it. | |
Rendered 刃尾トカゲ in the Japanese release, literally blade-tail lizard | No Chinese form has been published for this one as of 2026-09-12. |
苍梧之鬼, the ghosts of Cangwu, is confirmed as an enemy faction name rather than the name of a single creature, and 斥候, scout, is a rank within it. Since 苍梧 is the Chinese name for Lushland, the region the player starts in, the faction is native to the ground the game opens on. The Scouting Wraith is the only member of the faction revealed individually as of 2026-09-12, and no other rank has been named on any first-party surface, which leaves room for further ranks under the same faction name.
The Gamescom 2025 playable demo, set on a coastal island, introduced three enemy archetypes that have not yet been individually named in press materials. They give a flavor of the broader bestiary the full release will draw from.
Type | Description |
|---|---|
Wolf packs | Ferocious wild predators that ambush in groups. Hands-on players defeated an early pack with an improvised stick, demonstrating the freeform Crafting approach. |
Skeletal warriors | Armed undead grouped at camps. Vulnerable to thrown rocks and pebbles in addition to melee, showcasing physics-based Combat. |
Flame-covered skeletal boss | Mini-boss encounter on a beach in the demo. Significantly tougher than the standard skeletal warriors; appears to be tied to fire as both a fuel and a vulnerability. |
Later hands-on builds placed enemy soldiers on wooden watchtowers. The towers stand on support pillars that can be destroyed, which drops the structure and everyone on it, and the timber catches fire from fire arrows. Enemy placement is therefore part of the encounter design rather than decoration: where an enemy is standing is frequently the fastest thing to attack. See Combat.
The flame-wreathed boss of the public demo is the clearest published example of how CyancookGames ties an enemy signature to its vulnerability. The fire it carries is both the thing that makes it dangerous and the thing that ends it: a flood released from a broken dam higher on the same map killed it on contact. A boulder rolled into its stronghold removed a full phase from its health bar before the fight properly began. Neither route required the player to out-damage it.
This is the practical form of the studio position that encounters should not resolve into damage checks. An enemy is expected to have a property the world can be turned against, and finding it is treated as a legitimate substitute for winning the exchange. See Calamities and Physics System for the two mechanisms involved.
CyancookGames has stated repeatedly that Combat in Of Peaks and Tides should reward unconventional thinking. Encounters are built so that thrown rocks, lured floods, sandstorms, lightning strikes, and rapid plant growth all serve as legitimate damage and crowd-control sources. Boss kits in particular are designed to make terrain manipulation part of the fight rather than a passive backdrop.
This design choice also influences what counts as a fair fight. Enemies are not built around fixed damage-per-second checks. A well-prepared player carrying the right tools, Base Building supplies, and a tamed mount can take on threats that would overwhelm a fresh The Nolands survivor.
Alongside the four enemies revealed in February 2026, the Gamescom 2025 hands-on demo confirmed three additional creature categories present in the playable build:
Creature | Type | Encounter Notes |
|---|---|---|
Wolves | Common pack hunter | Encountered in a ferocious pack. Pack composition demands crowd-control answers from the player. |
Skeletal mobs | Common humanoid | Stationed at lookout camps. Use ranged and melee weapons; can be pelted with rocks at distance. |
Flaming Skeletal Boss | Mini-boss | Encountered on a beach in the demo. Described as challenging even in a short demo slice; combines elemental damage with the skeletal moveset. |
The February 2026 reveal describes the Scouting Wraith as carrying a war bow with enchantment effects, not as wielding multiple separate enchanted weapons. The wraith's threat comes from rapidly switching between bow shots and acrobatic melee with the same enchanted kit, not from cycling distinct weapons.
Not every beast in Everland is an enemy. The studio's creature showcase profiles seven named Creatures whose temperaments range from passive companions to outright threats, and many of them can be bonded through Creature Taming. The wolf packs encountered in the Gamescom 2025 demo line up with The Lurker Wolf, a massively built pack leader profiled as the archenemy of Lushland's ancestors rather than a companion. Whether a creature is fought or tamed depends on its nature, so the same animal type can appear as both a survival hazard and, once bonded, an ally.
CyancookGames has clarified how the revealed roster fits the finished game. Most of the beasts shown so far are creatures players are expected to encounter during the early journey through the starting regions, which means the current bestiary is a slice of the opening hours rather than a representative sample of the whole game. The studio has said elite creatures, regional overlords, and further unexpected beasts remain unannounced.
The studio also draws a distinction in language that is worth keeping straight when reading its updates. It calls the mythological fauna Unique Beasts rather than monsters, and treats them as part of the ecosystem, capable of being fought, studied, or bonded with. Several of the creatures profiled on the Creatures page sit on that boundary, and which ones are strictly hostile has not been settled publicly.
Beast encounters are intended to vary with conditions rather than repeat. CyancookGames has said storms, dense fog, and thunderstorms should change a beast's behavior, its combat tendencies, and in some cases its appearance, and that it wants the Unique Beasts to interact with celestial omens and the Calamities system. Nothing in that description has been demonstrated in a public build yet, so treat it as stated design intent rather than as observed behavior.
