Overview
Base building in Of Peaks and Tides allows players to construct custom structures in a wide variety of locations. Bases can be built on flat ground, mountain slopes, cliff faces, and even on top of tamed creatures. The system integrates with the game's crafting and physics system to produce structures that react realistically to environmental forces.
Building progression
Base building follows a clear progression path. Players begin by crafting a stone axe to fell trees, then use the timber to construct basic palisades. From there, they stack stones into walls and gradually raise full strongholds. This progression mirrors the crafting system's design, where each step unlocks new construction possibilities.
Over time, players can build shelters, individual houses, villages, and larger settlements. Land clearing and terrain adaptation are part of the process, as players reshape the environment to suit their building plans.
Fixed bases
Players can build permanent structures using gathered and crafted materials. Walls, floors, roofs, doors, and furnishings snap together using a modular building system. The terrain system supports construction on slopes and irregular surfaces, letting players build into mountainsides or over cliffs.
Fixed bases serve as storage, crafting stations, sleeping quarters, and defensive positions. Players can install traps, watchtowers, and automated defenses to protect against hostile creatures and environmental threats.
Mobile bases
One of the more unusual features is the ability to build structures on the backs of large tamed creatures. These mobile bases travel with the creature as it moves, giving players a portable home. The size and stability of the mobile base depends on the creature's carrying capacity and movement speed.
Durability and defense
Bases need to withstand both calamities and attacks from colossal beasts. A poorly placed base in a flood zone can be swept away by a tidal surge. Wooden structures burn in firestorms. Players must consider location, materials, and defensive measures when choosing where and how to build.
War machines
Bases can incorporate offensive elements. Players can build catapult platforms, arrow towers, and other siege equipment directly into their base structures. These defensive installations can be operated manually or, in some cases, automated through crafted mechanisms.
Land cultivation
Bases can include agricultural areas for growing crops. Players use crafted tools to clear and prepare land, plant seeds, and irrigate fields. Crop yields are affected by the season, weather, and proximity to water sources.
