Expanded with confirmed system overview covering all major gameplay pillars
Neverness to Everness is a free-to-play open-world action RPG and hack-and-slash game set in the urban city of Hethereau. Developed by Hotta Studio, a subsidiary of Perfect World Games, the game runs on Unreal Engine 5 and launches on PC, Mac, PS5, iOS, and Android with full cross-platform play and cross-save support.
The game blends fast-paced combat with deep life simulation, open-world exploration, and a wide variety of side activities. Its major gameplay pillars are outlined below.
The combat system centers on a 4-character team with real-time switching. Players build teams around the Esper Cycle elemental reaction system, chain parries to fill meters, and exploit the stagger/break system to create burst damage windows against tough enemies. Combat is responsive and rewards both aggressive offense and precise defensive timing.
Hethereau is an open-world city that players can traverse freely. Movement options include wall-running, climbing, swimming, driving vehicles, and riding public transit. The city is dense and vertical, encouraging exploration both at street level and across rooftops. A dynamic weather system and day-night cycle keep the environment feeling fresh.
City Tycoon is the game's life simulation layer. Players build and manage housing, run businesses, unlock their vehicle garage, and develop bonds with companion characters. This system gives long-term goals beyond combat and provides a personal stake in Hethereau's growth.
Hethereau is packed with side activities that range from relaxing to competitive. These include fishing, mahjong, street racing, rhythm games, claw machines, and part-time jobs like working at a coffee shop. Each activity offers its own rewards and contributes to the feeling that Hethereau is a real, lived-in city.
Co-op dungeons provide team-based PvE content. The Bank and The Hospital are anomaly dungeons requiring coordination between players. Pink Paws Heist is an extraction-style dungeon where stats are equalized, putting the focus on skill rather than gear.
Characters are obtained through the gacha system, which uses a Scarborough Fair board game mechanic instead of a traditional banner. There is no 50/50 system; the gacha structure is designed to be more transparent and player-friendly compared to many competitors in the genre.
In a departure from typical RPGs, NTE features a wanted/crime system inspired by games like GTA. Players who cause trouble in the city attract law enforcement attention, and being caught can lead to the prison system, a sandbox experience with its own gameplay loops.
Tying everything together is Hethereau itself. NPCs follow daily routines, weather changes in real-time, and the city shifts between day and night naturally. The result is an open world that feels inhabited and reactive, giving weight to every activity and interaction within it.
