Reviews for Marvel's Wolverine went live on September 10, 2026, five days ahead of the September 15 release. This page records where the aggregate picture settled and what reviewers agreed on.
Where the scores landed
By September 13, 2026, the two widely used review aggregators both placed the game in the high seventies out of one hundred. One carried a weighted score of 78 drawn from 113 critic reviews, with roughly three quarters of those reviews positive and none negative. The other carried a top critic average of 79 across 72 reviews, with 72 per cent of critics recommending it and a tier label of Strong. Individual scores ranged from full marks down to the equivalent of five out of ten.
The figures moved during the first days after the embargo. On September 10 the same two aggregates read 81 and 77; as the sample grew they converged on 79 and 78. Any figure quoted from embargo day is a snapshot of a much smaller set of reviews, which is worth knowing if you see one repeated.
By September 21, 2026, six days after release, the picture had settled slightly lower. One aggregator showed 77 from 128 critic reviews, with 70 per cent of those positive, 30 per cent mixed and none negative, alongside a user score of 6.9 from 4,642 ratings. The other showed a top critic average of 79 across 104 reviews, with 66 per cent of critics recommending the game and a player rating of 80. Several outlets framed the critic score as the lowest for a PlayStation Studios title of the PS5 era; that comparison is reported here as framing rather than as a fact about the game.
Snapshot | First aggregator | Second aggregator |
|---|---|---|
September 10, 2026 (embargo day) | 81 | 77 |
September 13, 2026 | 78 from 113 reviews | 79 from 72 reviews, 72 per cent recommend |
September 21, 2026 | 77 from 128 reviews; user score 6.9 from 4,642 ratings | 79 from 104 reviews, 66 per cent recommend; player rating 80 |
Player ratings
Player-side figures split by surface. On the PlayStation Store, a first-party storefront, the game held an average rating of 4.75 out of 5 from 42,663 ratings on September 21, 2026, with 86 per cent of those five-star. On the aggregator that carries a user score, the figure fell to 6.4 on September 18 during a wave of lowest-possible ratings, many of them citing the game's hand-holding or reasons unrelated to play, before recovering to 6.9 by September 21. That wave was widely described as review-bombing, so treat the user score as a temperature reading rather than a verdict. An industry analyst's estimate put first-week sales at around 1.9 million copies; neither Sony nor Insomniac had published a sales figure as of September 21, 2026, checked against the product page, the storefront, the studio's support pages and its official posts, so no sales number is stated here as fact.
What reviewers praised
Theme | Detail |
|---|---|
Combat | The claw work, dismemberment and the parry and dodge loop feeding Rage and the healing factor were the near-universal high point |
Presentation | Character models, facial animation and performance capture were repeatedly singled out, including progressive damage to Logan's clothes and skin |
Performances | Liam McIntyre as Logan and Troy Baker as Nathaniel Essex drew particular praise |
Variety of place | The globe-trotting structure across Canada, Japan and Madripoor was seen as one of the game's strengths |
What reviewers criticised
Theme | Detail |
|---|---|
Story cohesion | The most common complaint. Several reviewers felt the second half sets up a sequel rather than resolving its own arcs |
Restriction | Invisible walls, forced walking sections and on-rails set pieces were repeatedly flagged against the linear structure |
Combat depth | Reviewers who liked the opening hours often felt the system stops opening up, with limited enemy variety and heavy enemies that absorb too much damage |
Scale | The game was widely judged smaller in scope than recent first-party output, and that comparison was the most common frame used against it |
Hand-holding | Tutorial prompts, companion hint lines and the objective trail drew criticism as dated |
Repetition | Post-launch reaction added that the combat loop repeats over the run-time and that signposting is heavy enough for the game to feel as if it plays itself in places, while the story, the character work and Liam McIntyre's Logan stayed the most praised elements |
The objective trail was the single most argued-about feature of the launch window. Insomniac's own explanation of it, given by game director Mike Daly, is that it is the classic objective trail actualised in game as Wolverine catching a scent, and the game plays that straight in cutscenes. See Combat and Enhanced Senses.
That argument outlived the reviews. Post-launch reaction focused on the scent-trail visuals more than on any other presentation element, and Insomniac's community and marketing director James Stevenson said ahead of release that the trail is not always on and only appears when Logan is tracking a specific scent or sound. Hotfix 1.001.005 on September 19, 2026 reduced the opacity of the Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators, and the studio says it is exploring toggleable options for a future update. See Updates and Patch Notes.
How long it takes
Reviewers did not agree on a single figure, and the spread is wide enough that it is worth reporting as a range rather than a number. Insomniac has never published a playtime estimate of its own.
Play style | Reported range |
|---|---|
Main story, brisk | Around 12 hours; post-launch guides put a quick run at 12 to 15 |
Main story, typical | Roughly 15 to 20 hours; post-launch guides average 15 to 18 |
Story plus optional content | Around 20 to 25 hours |
Full trophy completion | Reported at over 20 hours, including mission replays and Nightmare Doors trials |
Platinum trophy | 15 to 20 hours in a single playthrough according to post-launch guides, with nothing missable |
The variables that move the figure are the difficulty settings, how much of the optional content you clear, and whether you chase the Platinum, which requires every collectible set and an Adamantium placing on a single Nightmare Trial. Post-launch guides agree that no trophy is tied to difficulty, so the Platinum is reachable on the easiest preset. See Trophies, Collectibles and Progression and Upgrades.
Scope note
This page records the reception of this game only. Comparisons that reviewers drew to the studio's other Marvel games are reported as reviewer framing rather than as facts about Marvel's Wolverine, and no mechanic, district or system from those games is documented anywhere on this wiki as Wolverine content.
