Extraordinary Substances

Initial version (2026-08-26)
Extraordinary Substances (非凡物质) are attribute pieces socketed into Sealed Artifacts. They are the game's affix layer: an artifact supplies the frame and the substances supply most of the stat lines that sit on it. The system opened on the third day of the Mainland China launch, August 23, 2026, and the studio's own strategy hub carries a full walkthrough of it.
Substances come in two directions that are not interchangeable. Attack substances (攻击物质) go into attack slots and specialisation slots; defence substances (防守物质) go into defence slots and specialisation slots. Specialisation slots, which open on day seven, are the only ones that accept either kind.
Two properties decide what a substance is worth, and neither is a level in the ordinary sense.
Property | Chinese | What it means |
|---|---|---|
Star count | 菱形标记 | The diamond marks in the bottom-right corner. One diamond is one affix, two is two, and so on. A substance never carries the same affix twice. Guides refer to this as the star level. |
Quality | 品质 | Purple or gold. Purple substances cannot be put into aggregation at all, which makes them raw material rather than equipment. |
Because purple substances are dead weight for fusion, the walkthrough recommends turning on automatic dismantling for them in the inventory's Extraordinary Substances tab, so they convert straight into the materials aggregation consumes.
Affixes carry their own three-tier quality, marked 凡 (common), 珍 (fine) and 稀 (rare). A multi-affix substance whose affixes are all 珍 gets a 珍 badge on its icon; one that includes a 稀 affix gets a 稀 badge instead. Sorting by badge is the fast way to separate keepers from fusion fodder.
How many of a socketed substance's affixes actually take effect depends on the artifact holding it, which is covered under Sealed Artifacts: a purple artifact activates four affixes, a gold artifact five.
Aggregation (聚合) fuses two substances into one. It is the only route to a high-affix piece: everything the game hands out through activities and currency shops is one or two stars, and the known ceiling is six stars, meaning six different affixes on a single substance.
Each fusion consumes an Aggregation Factor (聚合因子) and Sol (苏勒).
The star-up odds are shown in the fusion interface and are the only published probabilities in the system:
Inputs | Outcome | Chance |
|---|---|---|
Two substances of the same star count | Gains one star | 20 percent |
Two substances of the same star count | Stays at the same star count | 80 percent |
Three-star fused with two-star | Keeps three stars | 40 percent |
Three-star fused with two-star | Drops to two stars | 60 percent |
The 20 percent figure holds for any same-star pairing, so a fusion chain is a long run of failures punctuated by occasional progress rather than a steady climb.
Fusion is not a straight replacement. The settlement screen shows the two inputs and the generated result side by side, and the player keeps exactly one of the three. The other two are destroyed. The result's affixes are drawn at random from the pool the inputs supplied, so a generated result is not automatically better than what went in. The standing advice is to keep the stronger input unless the result actually gained a star or landed a better affix spread.
This is why the walkthrough opens with a warning against the one-click aggregation button during the tutorial. In the opening days a player owns very few substances, and one-click fusion spends them on pairings nobody chose.
Putting a four-star or higher substance into aggregation carries an extra requirement on top of the materials: the account must already hold two attack substances and two defence substances at four stars or above. High-star fusion is gated behind broad progress rather than a single lucky piece.
Fusing raises Aggregation Proficiency (聚合熟练度), and crossing proficiency thresholds pays out extra rewards. Failed fusions still build it, so the currency spent on unsuccessful attempts is not entirely lost.
A second layer sits on top of star count, and it is where the system's ceiling actually is. Both effects share one precondition: the two inputs must carry six or more affixes between them.
Effect | Chinese | Condition | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
Affix upgrade | 词条升级 | Six or more affixes across both inputs | Some affixes on the result roll higher values than either input carried |
Mutated affix, gold tier | 异变词条 | Six or more affixes across both inputs | Very small chance. Which mutation appears is entirely random and unrelated to the input affixes |
Mutated affix, gold or orange tier | 异变词条 | Eight or more affixes across both inputs | Very small chance, with the orange tier reachable only at this threshold |
Mutations respect the attack and defence split: an attack substance can only produce attack-type mutations, a defence substance only defence-type ones. The top mutation is named 愚者, the Fool, and it has its own entry requirement. It only has any chance of appearing when at least two four-star substances go into the fusion. Its effect is unusually strong for an affix, because it can suppress a sealed artifact's negative effect outright, and every sealed artifact carries one.
The published approach splits a player's substance pool in two rather than pushing everything toward one goal, on the reasoning that mutation odds are too low to plan around.
Pool | Chinese | What goes in | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
Floor pool | 保底池 | Substances whose affixes are all 珍 | Builds one reliable four-affix piece the character can actually equip |
Mutation pool | 异变池 | Substances carrying 凡 affixes | Fused repeatedly in the hope of a mutated affix, on the understanding that most attempts fail |
Fool pool | 愚者池 | Four-affix substances held back specifically for Fool attempts | Fused against each other to chase the 愚者 affix |
The rule of thumb is that at three stars and below you fuse like with like, and at four stars and above you prioritise star-ups and clean up individual weak affixes afterwards. That cleanup step, called refinement, works by fusing a high-star piece carrying one 凡 affix against basic two-affix 珍 substances: the pairing rarely gains a star but very often preserves the star count while replacing the weak affix.
Substances are one of several progression tracks that run alongside the Sequence ladder rather than inside it. The others are covered under Sealed Artifacts, the Connections System, and Sequences.
