Gameplay Mechanics

Replaced leak-derived drive-by, swim shooting and car interior claims with the vehicle shooting shown in Trailer 2; attributed the carry limit to reported remarks; dropped the leaked button mapping
Grand Theft Auto VI is an open-world action game. The mechanics below have been shown or described in the official trailers, on the Rockstar website, in the August 2026 Extended Look showcase, and in accompanying materials.
Players can switch between Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos during gameplay. GTA VI uses a two-character structure built around the pair's Bonnie-and-Clyde partnership; see Character Switching for details.

Switching was shown directly in the Extended Look, including a swap performed mid-freefall during a base jump. It is not free-form throughout: some missions lock the player to one protagonist, some force a swap, and some allow either. Both trailers show missions from both characters' perspectives, suggesting substantial content for each.
Trailer 2 shows multiple robbery scenes. In the opening seconds, Jason enters a store carrying a baseball bat, slaps a clerk, and takes cash from the register. The cashier is left on the floor. Other shots in the trailer show what appear to be a pawn shop robbery and a liquor store holdup.
The baseball bat robbery is notable because Jason uses physical intimidation rather than a firearm. Whether these trailer scenes represent player-controlled gameplay or cinematic cutscenes has not been confirmed by Rockstar. The Extended Look later showed a store robbery in play, with a mask equipped from the clothing wheel beforehand, and previews of that showcase reported that every store can be robbed, with the approach varying by store type.
The game's story synopsis describes an "easy score" that goes wrong, and Raul Bautista (a confirmed supporting character described by Rockstar as a "seasoned bank robber") suggests that larger, planned heists are also part of the game. See Robberies and Heists for more.
GTA VI reportedly imposes strict carrying limits: two long guns and two handguns on the player's person at a time. Extra weapons go in vehicle trunks, so the trunk of the current vehicle works as a mobile armory and loadout planning before a mission becomes a tactical choice. For full details, see Weapons and Combat.
The game has a satirical social media ecosystem. Both trailers prominently show a TikTok-style video platform where NPCs record events and post them. Other in-game apps parody Uber (ride-sharing), WhatsApp (messaging), and OnlyFans (content subscription). NPCs actively pull out their phones to film notable events, including crimes committed by the player.
This system ties into the game's broader satire of modern American culture, particularly Florida's internet and celebrity scene. Rockstar has since described a separate reputation system, the Criminal Profile, which tracks how each protagonist commits crime rather than what appears about them online. Whether social media activity feeds into that profile, or into the wanted level, had not been published as of 12 September 2026.
Characters can work out at gyms and outdoor fitness locations. Jason is shown lifting weights on a beach; Lucia is seen sparring in a gym. Previews of the Extended Look reported that the protagonists' builds visibly respond to their eating and exercise habits. See Fitness and Body Mechanics for details.
Character appearance changes over time. Strand-based hair physics mean hair grows and moves realistically. Characters are also seen with different hairstyles and facial hair across different trailer scenes, suggesting grooming options or natural progression.
Vehicle interiors are highly detailed. Working speedometers, fuel gauges, and other instruments are visible. Rearview mirrors display real-time reflections of the environment behind the vehicle, powered by the updated RAGE engine. Trailer footage includes shots from inside vehicles, but Rockstar has not said whether a first-person driving view can be selected, and no first-person mode was shown in the Extended Look.
Crouching is confirmed visible in trailer footage. Whether a full stealth system is present has not been officially detailed.
Several mechanics often listed for the game trace to leaked 2022 development footage rather than to Rockstar's official material: zip-tie restraints, using NPCs as human shields, surrendering to the police, switching the firing hand, and carrying or looting bodies. This wiki does not treat them as confirmed. The non-lethal option shown in the Extended Look is the limb shot: hitting an enemy in the arm or leg can take them out of a fight without killing them, and the reticle shows yellow rather than red.
Trailer 2 shows characters firing from moving vehicles, including Jason shooting a pistol out of a car window and Lucia firing a grenade launcher from the back of a bus at pursuing police. Firing from a pickup truck's bed, shooting while swimming and interactive car interior controls appear only in lists drawn from leaked 2022 development footage, and Rockstar has not confirmed them.
Dual wielding has not been shown. Expanded drive-by options and trunk storage point to weapon handling that prioritizes tactical decisions over raw firepower.
The Extended Look showcase of 27 August 2026 put several systems on screen for the first time, moving them from expected to shown.
System | Detail |
|---|---|
Character switching | Demonstrated directly, including a switch performed mid-freefall during a base jump. |
Vehicle theft | A lock-jimmying minigame replaces the single-button hotwire. Higher-tier vehicles add trackers and key-fob cloning. |
Non-lethal takedowns | The reticle signals lethality by colour, red on a kill and yellow otherwise. |
Minimap | Renders three-dimensional buildings rather than a flat radar. |
Interaction menu | A context-sensitive menu in the lower right handles interactions with characters and animals, including petting dogs. |
Clothing wheel | The weapon wheel flips to a second wheel of clothing and items, used to equip a mask before a robbery. |
Destructible environments | Walls break under force during the police raid sequence. |
Wanted meter | A six star meter with icons tracking what the police have identified: face, clothing, vehicle, and that the pair are travelling together. Stars run white to red once contact is broken. |
Focus | A focus meter drives a slow-motion state, with vitals highlighting marking a killshot in red and a disarming shot in yellow. |
Weapon visibility | Two handguns are carried concealed at all times and two long guns visibly, one in hand and one on the back. Pedestrians and police react to a weapon on show. |
Refuelling | Vehicles need fuel or charge, in a stop of around ten seconds. |
Gated switching | Some missions lock the player to one protagonist, some force a swap, and some allow either. Switching is not free-form throughout. |
Economy gating | Story missions can be held back until the player has enough money, and every store can be robbed, with the approach varying by store type. |
Rockstar described a reputation system called the Criminal Profile during a studio preview reported in early September 2026. It sorts a protagonist's behaviour into one of four named states, Professional, Aggressive, Violent and Psycho, with a further condition described as a shattered profile sitting outside that set. The profile is held separately for Jason and Lucia, so the two leads can diverge over a playthrough.
Changes surface as notifications, which can be switched off without disabling the system. Rockstar has described the profile as neither a punishment mechanic nor a grind, and has compared it in intent to the honour system in the studio's previous open-world western. What each state changes in play, and what reaches or reverses a shattered profile, had not been published as of 12 September 2026.
