Development History
Grand Theft Auto VI has had one of the longest and most closely watched development cycles in gaming history. From early groundwork to a massive security breach and two release delays, the road to launch has been anything but smooth.
Early Development (2014 to 2021)

An industry-wide 2022 report described how the studio had undergone cultural changes following criticism of crunch conditions during Red Dead Redemption 2's development. According to that reporting, GTA VI's scope was initially even larger before being scaled back to focus on a tighter experience set primarily in and around Vice City.
Official Confirmation (February 2022)
On February 4, 2022, Rockstar Games posted to social media that active development of the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series was well underway. This was the first official acknowledgment of GTA VI's existence, ending years of speculation.
Red Dead Online Wind-Down (July 2022)
In July 2022, Rockstar announced that Red Dead Online would receive no further major content updates. The community widely interpreted this as a reallocation of development resources toward GTA VI.
The LAPSUS$ Leak (September 2022)

On September 18, 2022, the largest leak in video game history hit the internet. A hacker posted approximately 90 in-progress development videos to an online forum. The footage showed early Vice City environments, character animation tests, and a playable sequence of Lucia and an unnamed male character robbing a Waffle House-style diner. The footage clearly showed a female protagonist, two playable characters, and the Vice City setting.
Trailer 1 (December 2023)
The first official trailer was scheduled for December 5, 2023, but leaked on December 4, prompting Rockstar to release it early the same day. Set to Tom Petty's "Love Is a Long Road," the trailer runs about 90 seconds and confirmed the Vice City setting, the dual protagonists (a man and a woman), and a modern-day time period. The trailer showed alligators loose in suburbs, NPCs recording events on phones, and sweeping aerial shots of a neon-lit cityscape. For a full breakdown, see the Trailers article.
The trailer became the most-viewed non-music video on YouTube in its first 24 hours. Tom Petty's "Love Is a Long Road" saw a roughly 37,000% spike in Spotify streams overnight.
First Delay: Fall 2025 to May 2026
Take-Two Interactive initially targeted a Fall 2025 release window for GTA VI, mentioned during investor earnings calls. On May 2, 2025, Rockstar officially announced the game would be delayed to May 26, 2026. The studio cited the need for additional development time to meet their quality standards.
Trailer 2 (May 2025)

Four days after the delay announcement, Rockstar released Trailer 2 on May 6, 2025. The nearly three-minute trailer primarily followed Jason Duval while also showing Lucia, Vice City, and several supporting characters. Rockstar stated that all footage was captured on PlayStation 5.
Alongside the trailer, Rockstar updated the official GTA VI website with 70 new screenshots and written profiles for the game's protagonists and key supporting characters. The full names Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos were revealed here for the first time. Trailer 2 received over 475 million views across all platforms within its first 24 hours, breaking the cross-platform record previously held by the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer.
Second Delay: May 2026 to November 2026
On November 6, 2025, Rockstar announced a second delay, pushing the release from May 26, 2026 to November 19, 2026. Rockstar announced it on its own channels, saying that "these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect."
Marketing Campaign (2026)
During a February 2026 earnings call, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick reaffirmed the November 19, 2026 release date and stated that Rockstar's full marketing campaign for GTA VI would begin in summer 2026. On the May 21, 2026 Q4 and full-year FY2026 earnings call, Zelnick and his staff reconfirmed the November 19, 2026 date multiple times and emphasized that the company expects to begin the major marketing campaign in the summer. On June 24, 2026, Rockstar confirmed pricing and editions, and pre-orders opened at midnight local time on June 25, 2026: a Standard Edition at $79.99 and a Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition at $99.99, with the official cover art revealed a week earlier on June 18, 2026. Zelnick also said Rockstar would make more announcements about platforms in due time; no PC version had been announced as of October 19, 2026. On August 6, 2026, Rockstar announced Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, a video showcase that premiered on August 27, 2026 on Netflix at 3 p.m. Eastern Time and was released on the Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the official website at 9 p.m. Eastern Time that day. The announcement restated the November 19, 2026 release date.
Gameplay Leaks and Rockstar's Response (August 2026)
In the second half of August 2026, roughly a week before the Extended Look was due to premiere, dozens of unofficial videos said to show Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay began circulating on social media. Take-Two Interactive responded through the courts, filing subpoena requests in the Southern District of New York seeking records from Discord, Microsoft and X Corp. that might identify the source. Discord publicly said it had not been served and that it would evaluate the validity and scope of any request it received.
Rockstar Games addressed the situation publicly on August 26, 2026, in a statement posted to its social channels. The studio said the leaked gameplay videos had been heartbreaking for the team and were not how it had intended players to see the game. It apologised for how long the wait had been, said the game was nearly finished and that it was excited for everyone to see the Extended Look the next day, acknowledged that some spoilers might affect the intended experience, and asked players to wait a little longer and play the game for themselves on November 19.
The leaked material is not a reliable guide to the finished game and is not used as a source anywhere on this wiki. Footage captured from an unreleased build can show content that is later cut, reworked or renamed, and none of it carries Rockstar's confirmation.
Extended Look, Album and Annual Meeting (August to September 2026)
The Extended Look premiered as scheduled on August 27, 2026, running 26 minutes 48 seconds, first on Netflix and six hours later on YouTube. On September 17, 2026, Rockstar announced Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, a 34 track collection of original music set for November 19, and the same day Take-Two held its annual meeting of stockholders, where Strauss Zelnick restated the fiscal 2027 net bookings outlook of $8.0 to $8.2 billion. Asked about a PC version at the meeting, he spoke about the company's platform strategy in general terms and announced none. The November 19, 2026 release date stood.
Developer Interviews and Final Ratings (September to October 2026)
Rockstar developers spoke at length about the game in the weeks before launch. In a magazine cover story published digitally on September 29, 2026, Rupert Humphries, Rockstar's senior vice president of narrative, said the team had made many research trips to Florida over the years, from riding around at night with former police officers to visiting nightclubs and strip clubs and spending time on the beaches, in the Everglades and in the Keys. In an October 2026 fashion-magazine feature, Aaron Garbut of Rockstar North was reported as saying that every Rockstar game starts with research trips, describing a small group driving from Miami through surrounding towns and down the Florida Keys to Key West.
In the same October feature, Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, described how the game is built: the team works in eight-week milestones, pulling agreed sections of the game together, evaluating them, and using the resulting notes to set the focus of the next milestone, year after year.
Final age ratings appeared on the console storefronts in early October 2026. By October 13 the game showed an ESRB Mature 17+ rating and a PEGI 18 rating, along with final ratings in Australia, New Zealand and India, and by October 19 the German, Japanese and Brazilian ratings had appeared as well (USK 18, CERO Z and an 18 in Brazil); see Platforms and Editions.
On October 15, 2026, Rockstar released the Grand Theft Auto VI Launch Trailer, which it says was captured in game on a PlayStation 5, and named the electronic duo Justice as the composers of the game's original score.
