Added Rob Nelson's comments that money gates parts of the story and that robberies are a large part of play between story missions
The economy and property system in Grand Theft Auto VI gives players the ability to acquire safehouses, engage in business ventures, and purchase vehicles across the state of Leonida. Rockstar Games has not released a comprehensive breakdown of the economy system; what is known comes from the trailers, official screenshots, character biographies, edition copy and the August 2026 Extended Look.
Safehouses serve as the player's home base, providing a location to save game progress and store vehicles. The first confirmed safehouse is the Leonida Keys Safehouse, a stilt house in Key Lento that is available from the beginning of the game. This property is owned by Brian Heder who allows Jason to live there rent-free in exchange for collecting debts from other tenants.
After Lucia is released from prison, she moves into the Key Lento safehouse with Jason making it a shared residence for both protagonists. Additional safehouses are expected to become available as the story progresses and players accumulate wealth from criminal activities and legitimate business ventures.
Property | Type | Location | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Leonida Keys Safehouse | Stilt house | Starting safehouse; free; owned by Brian Heder | |
Paradise Garage | Garage / safehouse | Ultimate Edition; weapon locker and stash box |

The Ultimate Edition adds the Paradise Garage, a safehouse garage in Watson Bay equipped with a weapon locker and a stash box for storing stolen goods, along with two exclusive vehicle mod shops: Rideout Customs in Vice City and One-Eyed Willie's at Lake Leonida. See Pre-Order and Editions for the full edition contents.
Character biographies released by Rockstar strongly suggest that business ownership and real estate investment play a major role in GTA VI's economy. Boobie Ike is described as having built "a legitimate empire spanning real estate, a strip club, and a recording studio." His holdings include the Jack of Hearts strip club and the Only Raw Records recording studio, demonstrating the kinds of businesses that exist within GTA VI's economy.
Vehicle acquisition in GTA VI is expected to include multiple methods. In addition to the traditional GTA approach of stealing vehicles on the street, players will be able to purchase cars through dealerships and showrooms.
The Extended Look showed how stealing works. Locks are jimmied open through a short minigame, and higher-tier vehicles add trackers and key-fob cloning, so expensive models are harder to take. The WAINK phone app scans a parked car before a theft and reports what is needed to steal it, what it would fetch if resold, and what it would cost to register.
Once acquired, vehicles can be stored at safehouses and garages owned by the protagonists. Rockstar has not said how many vehicles the Key Lento safehouse can hold.
Beyond legitimate businesses and property purchases, GTA VI's economy is deeply tied to criminal activities. Robberies and heists provide direct income through store holdups, bank robberies, and vehicle theft. Drug running operations, connected to characters like Brian Heder, represent another income stream available to players.
Money also gates the story. Previews of the Extended Look reported that some story missions stay locked until the player has raised enough cash, and described robberies the pair organize themselves as one way to raise it. In a 2026 interview published in full in October 2026, Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, said money matters more in this story than in previous Grand Theft Auto games, and that at times the player has to go out into the world and make money, for example by stealing and selling cars or by robbing places, before the mission flow can advance. He also called robberies a large part of what players can and need to do between story missions. The protagonists' arc runs from small-time crime in the Keys to more ambitious operations across Vice City.
As of September 23, 2026, Rockstar has not described heist scouting, property investment, money laundering or rival gangs taking over the player's businesses for Grand Theft Auto VI.
The rent-free arrangement at the Key Lento safehouse in exchange for debt collection is a new twist on property acquisition, blending safehouse mechanics with mission objectives.
