God of War Laufey is developed by Santa Monica Studio. Cory Barlog serves as Head of Creative and Ariel Lawrence as Game Director. Bear McCreary, who scored God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok, returns as composer and has said he has been working on the game for years.
Reveal
The game was announced on June 2, 2026 as the closing segment of a PlayStation State of Play, where roughly twenty minutes of gameplay were shown. It is the first mainline-style God of War to center a protagonist other than Kratos, putting Faye in the lead. The studio has framed it not as a prequel but as a continuation of the timeline, a parallel story that begins around the moment Faye is laid to rest at the start of God of War (2018). Sony has also confirmed that more Kratos stories will follow after Laufey.
Comic-Con 2026
Santa Monica Studio confirmed that God of War Laufey will headline a panel titled Forging God of War's Next Heroes at San Diego Comic-Con on July 24, 2026, running from 5:30 to 6:30 PM PT in Ballroom 20. Game Director Ariel Lawrence and Head of Creative Cory Barlog are set to join cast members Deborah Ann Woll (Faye), Chris Judge (Kratos), Jack Quaid (Phranque), and Perlina Lau (Rue) for the first time since the reveal, sharing new details about the game's heroes along with behind-the-scenes looks at its development and performance capture.
Design Goals
The team described prioritizing intimate, brutal combat, a rich world to explore, and a story at the heart of the experience. A stated aim was to blend the movement and fluidity of the series' Greek era with the Norse era's world-building and character ties, while crafting a fresh feel for Faye built around her Golden Hand soul powers and her time in the Everywhen.
After the Reveal
Santa Monica Studio followed the announcement with a set of companion features. Cory Barlog and Ariel Lawrence recorded an extended interview covering the reveal, how the idea of a Faye-led game first came about and the long-term creative vision for the series. Separate pieces introduced the cast, had the game's Narrative Director and Lead Writer set the stage for Faye's story, and had the combat designers break down her agility, abilities and legendary weapon. Barlog and Lawrence were also interviewed together on the official PlayStation podcast on June 5, 2026.
