Visions are the central character-building system in Final Fantasy Resonance. They are items, crystallized essences of characters from this game's story and from across the mainline FINAL FANTASY series. Equipping one grants a party member that character's power in combat. Square Enix presents the system as the evolution of the series' Job system: each Vision works like an equippable job, while the abilities it teaches can travel into other setups.
A Vision is an item holding the crystallized essence of a character. Completing events involving characters you meet throughout the story gives you the chance to obtain their Vision. Equip it to Rain or any other party member to raise that member's stats and unlock the skills and magic the Vision carries.
Each character can equip only one Vision at a time, and official materials stress that deciding who wears which Vision can greatly influence the outcome of battle. The party fields up to four members, and the developers noted that equipped Visions appear behind their wearers in battle, so a full formation can show eight figures on screen.
Visions act as helpers rather than travelling companions. The developers said Visions do not hold conversations with the main cast: they lend their strength in battle while the story stays with Rain and the people around him.
Visions of legacy FINAL FANTASY heroes wait inside vision crystal sanctums scattered across the world, called Shrines of Light in Japanese materials. Stepping into a sanctum lets you revisit stories from the original games and unlock the hero's Vision.
Visions tied to this game's own cast follow a different route. They come from character events, side quests, and deepening bonds, and some are earned through battles.
Everything is earnable in-game. The producer said there is no DLC for Visions: keep playing and every one of them comes within reach. That marks a deliberate break from the source material. Final Fantasy Resonance rebuilds the first story arc of FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS, a mobile game that handed out its characters through a gacha, and the gacha is gone entirely here.
Fighting battles with a Vision equipped strengthens your affinity with it. As affinity grows, the Vision unlocks new abilities and skills for the character wearing it.
Learned abilities outlive the Vision that taught them. Once a character learns an ability, it stays equippable even while a different Vision is active, as long as the full set fits within a cost limit. Abilities from multiple Visions can sit on one character at the same time, and certain combinations produce strong synergies. Official materials name Dualcast, which allows consecutive spellcasting, and Spellblade Dual Wield as examples. In preview builds, characters carried up to eight ability slots. Square Enix calls the result a more accessible, evolved take on the series' familiar Job system. Official build examples include handing a high-attack character an offense-focused Vision, or chasing a spellblade build with a Vision versed in magic. The producer said party preparation before battle carries the same weight it did in the source game, and that the battle system is tuned so every Vision character has a place where it shines.
Each Vision powers a unique Resonance attack, the system's signature payoff. Stagger every enemy on the field to trigger a sweeping stagger, and at the end of the resulting bonus phase one party member can unleash the Resonance of their equipped Vision. Only one Resonance can be used per sweeping stagger, so the pick matters. The full stagger loop is explained at Stagger System.
Resonances come in many forms. Some deal heavy damage, some hit every enemy at once, and others apply buffs or heals. Each one plays a cinematic sequence unique to its Vision, and the legacy heroes' sequences render in full 3D.
The developers built every Vision's ability kit from zero for this game. Signature moves survive, Cloud's Cross-slash among them, but each character's preferred elements and ability types were redesigned around this battle system rather than imported from their home games. The producer said the creators of the numbered titles reviewed how their characters were handled and approved it.
The first time you call a legacy hero into battle, the game plays a short movie explaining that character's original game, giving newcomers context before the fight carries on.
In total, 26 Visions appear. The producer said 16 of them are legacy heroes, one for each numbered title from FINAL FANTASY I through XVI, with FINAL FANTASY XI represented by Shantotto and FINAL FANTASY XIV by Y'shtola.
