Release Date and Platforms

Updated release status to launched, replaced the pre-launch unlock-time note, added launch-day known issues, cloud play options and two new Japanese launch campaigns, and re-dated the release date split
FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE launched on October 22, 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, spread across six storefronts, with the Steam version dated one day later in Square Enix's own specification table. Square Enix revealed the game on June 9, 2026 during a Nintendo Direct presentation and opened pre-orders the same day. A free demo covering Chapter 1 followed on September 3, 2026.
Every version launched on October 22, 2026, a Thursday. The lone wrinkle is the Steam release, which official Japanese materials date October 23, 2026, a Friday, in Japan Standard Time, while the Steam listing itself, in English and Japanese alike, shows October 22, 2026. Square Enix has not explained the gap between the two dates, so both are recorded here as published rather than resolved into a single global unlock.
Before launch, the PlayStation Store listings showed the PlayStation 5 version releasing at midnight local time on October 22, 2026 in the United States (Eastern Time), the United Kingdom and Japan. That timing came from the store listings rather than from a Square Enix announcement, and the line no longer appears on those listings now that the game is out. Square Enix did not publish a per-platform table of unlock times or pre-load dates before release. Its Asian launch announcement notes only that release times may vary by region, and the Steam launch announcement was posted at 17:00 UTC on October 22, 2026, which was 02:00 on October 23 in Japan.

October 22 also happens to be the date FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS, the mobile game this title rebuilds, launched in Japan back in 2015. Asked whether the matching date was deliberate, the producer called it a coincidence.
Square Enix's launch announcement of October 22, 2026 lists the game as out on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and Xbox on PC, and notes that players can still try the free demo first, with save data carrying over on all platforms. The English and Japanese versions of Square Enix's launch announcement on Steam listed two known issues the team was investigating:
The minimap and help display may reappear at certain times after being hidden.
Audio noise may occasionally occur on certain CPU configurations.
The announcement asks players who run into any other problem to contact Square Enix Support. The Korean, Chinese, French and German versions of the same announcement do not carry the known-issues list.
Two storefronts list cloud play as of October 22, 2026. The Xbox store marks the game as cloud playable with Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate, with a purchase of the game still required. The PlayStation Store lists cloud streaming on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation Portal as supported only with the Premium subscription tier. Both are storefront statements rather than Square Enix announcements.
The reveal came during the Nintendo Direct broadcast of June 9, 2026, and Square Enix confirmed the date, platforms, and pricing in a press release issued the same day. The official Japanese site marked the occasion with the game's Direct segment, the announce trailer, a producer message video, and an official livestream special. Pre-orders went live across storefronts immediately, with digital pre-orders carrying bonus item packs.
The game is single-player only on every platform. Physical editions exist for the Nintendo and PlayStation versions, while the Xbox and PC versions are digital only.
Platform | Storefront | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Nintendo Switch 2 | Nintendo eShop | Physical and digital releases; sold as its own product rather than as an upgrade of the Nintendo Switch build |
Nintendo Switch | Nintendo eShop | Physical and digital releases; the Nintendo Switch build also runs on Nintendo Switch 2 |
PlayStation 5 | PlayStation Store | Physical and digital releases; PS5 only, with no PlayStation 4 version |
Xbox Series X|S | Microsoft Store | Digital only; listed as Optimized for Xbox Series X|S and as an Xbox Play Anywhere title |
PC (Windows) | Steam | Digital only; Windows is the sole supported OS, and the build uses Denuvo Anti-tamper; dated October 23, 2026 in Square Enix's Japanese specification table and October 22, 2026 on the Steam listing |
PC (Windows) | Microsoft Store on Windows | Digital only; named Xbox on PC in Square Enix's launch announcement |
The Steam build lists full controller support and modest system requirements. Language support differs by platform: the console versions carry five languages, while the PC and Xbox versions carry eight. The accessibility and language support page lists the full matrix. The free demo released on September 3, 2026 is available on all six of the storefronts above and was still offered after launch.
The Nintendo Switch 2 release is a separate product, not an enhanced mode of the Nintendo Switch build, and Square Enix's Japanese store pages set out exactly what that means for anyone who owns or plans to own both consoles.
Point | What Square Enix states |
|---|---|
Install size | 8.7 GB on Nintendo Switch, 12.6 GB on Nintendo Switch 2 |
Separate release | The Nintendo Switch 2 version is its own product and will not run on the original Nintendo Switch; the store warns buyers against purchasing both by mistake |
Upgrade path | None is planned for sale, so a Nintendo Switch owner cannot pay a difference to move up to the Nintendo Switch 2 version |
Save data | Saves do not carry across in either direction, Nintendo Switch to Nintendo Switch 2 or back |
Deluxe upgrade | The Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 Digital Deluxe Upgrades are not compatible with each other; see Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses |
Backward compatibility | The Nintendo Switch build runs on Nintendo Switch 2, and the compatibility check records no problems found in testing |
As of October 19, 2026, Square Enix has not published any Nintendo Switch 2 enhancement. No resolution, framerate, or graphical improvement over the Nintendo Switch version appears in official material, and when those store pages were last checked, on September 12, 2026, the ones that spell out install sizes, upgrade paths, and save behavior said nothing about how the two builds look or run. Until Square Enix publishes performance figures, the only documented differences are the install size and the purchasing boundaries above.
Board | Region | Rating | Content Descriptors |
|---|---|---|---|
ESRB | North America | E10+ | Fantasy Violence, Suggestive Themes, Language, Alcohol Reference |
PEGI | Europe | 12 | Violence, Bad Language, In-Game Purchases |
CERO | Japan | C (ages 15 and up) | Crime |
USK | Germany | 12 | Fantasy violence |
OFLC | Australia | M | Mature themes and violence |
KGRB | South Korea | 12 | Sexuality, violence |
DEJUS | Brazil | 12 | Violence |
CSRR | Taiwan | C15 | Anti-social content: depictions of crime or inappropriate behavior, judged unlikely to prompt imitation by minors (Parental Guidance 15) |
IGRS | Indonesia | Store listing field | The Steam store page's ratings block carries an IGRS value of banned. That is a storefront listing field rather than a published board ruling, so it is recorded here as a store detail and not as a ratings outcome for the territory. |
The Australian, South Korean and Brazilian descriptors are as listed in the Steam store page's ratings block. PEGI's in-game purchases descriptor, along with a purchases flag on the Xbox listing, reflects the deluxe item pack that Square Enix sells separately. The producer has said there is no DLC for Visions; every Vision is earned in-game.
Square Enix's Japanese specification table states the date split directly: October 22, 2026 on every platform, with the Steam version alone dated October 23, 2026. Square Enix has not said why its Japanese copy puts that version a day behind the rest. Its Japanese announcement of September 17, 2026, the description of its Japanese final trailer, and the descriptions of its Chinese and Korean final trailers and its legacy-hero videos, most recently on October 16, 2026, repeat the October 23 Steam date, while its English Tokyo Game Show Trailer descriptions list Steam with the other platforms for October 22. The split carried through launch day: Square Enix's Japanese launch notice of October 22, 2026 and its Asian launch announcement in English, Japanese, Korean and Traditional Chinese still footnote the Steam version as October 23, 2026, while its North American launch press release and English launch trailer descriptions list Steam alongside the other platforms. The Steam listing gives October 22, 2026, and Steam's launch announcement was posted at 17:00 UTC on October 22, 2026, which was 02:00 on October 23 in Japan, so as of October 23, 2026 the split stands.
Square Enix announced three tie-ins in Japan around the launch. The atre Akihabara collaboration was scheduled for October 2 to October 15, 2026, with the building's exterior wrapped in the game's key art and character visuals and a FINAL FANTASY series pop-up shop on the second floor of atre Akihabara 1 selling the game's latest goods alongside other FINAL FANTASY series merchandise. A special-label red wine, Château Mercian Rouge for FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE, was scheduled to go on sale on October 22, 2026 at 13,000 yen including tax, sold through Mercian's own online shop; it is the brand's first collaboration product with a game. From October 22 to November 10, 2026, participating Gokurakuyu and RAKU SPA bathhouses run a collaboration with themed baths that rotate through the game itself, Rain, Lasswell and Fina, alongside collaboration goods, a menu and a hologram card set.
Square Enix's Japanese launch-day notice added two more campaigns: a bookstore collaboration at 350 bookstores across Japan from October 23 to November 8, 2026, giving an original bookmark featuring the game's characters (eight designs in all) with purchases at participating stores, and an arcade collaboration at 23 locations from November 7 to November 29, 2026, with a themed menu, goods and, at some locations, a photo spot.
