A free demo for FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE released on September 3, 2026, on every platform the full game shipped on. It runs from the opening through the end of Chapter 1, takes roughly 3 to 5 hours, costs nothing, carries its save data into the full game, and was still offered after the full game launched on October 22, 2026.
What the Demo Covers
Square Enix describes the demo as the same Chapter 1 range that appears in the retail build, freely explorable, with level caps applied that the full game does not impose. The published estimate is approximately 3 to 5 hours of play, which lines up with earlier preview builds of the same chapter running about five hours.

Save Data Carryover
Progress made in the demo transfers into the full game, so the Chapter 1 run does not have to be repeated at launch. Square Enix states this in every regional version of the demo announcement, English and Japanese included. What the demo does not carry is the pre-order and early purchase bonuses: those are collected in the full game from the postbox in front of the inn in the Town of Mitra.
At Tokyo Game Show 2026
Square Enix ran a separate playable build at its Tokyo Game Show 2026 booth in Hall 3, stand 03-S01, from September 17 to September 21, 2026. Visitors chose from three save files, and Square Enix stated that two of them held content the downloadable demo does not.
Save file | What It Offers |
|---|---|
New Game | The story from the beginning, as in the downloadable demo |
Dungeon | A slice of the core gameplay, described as clearing a mid-game dungeon |
Battles against powerful foes in the Colosseum |
Players who took a turn received a retro-style game box and an exclusive FINAL FANTASY TRADING CARD GAME promotional card featuring Fina, card number PR-232/16-058R, while each day's supply lasted; Square Enix noted that some novelties were handed out on the public days only. The booth also carried a large wall panel of the game's pixel character art, with a spot-the-difference campaign run against the same illustration printed in the booth pamphlet, and the game was among the titles listed for the booth theater.
No Resonance stage event appeared in Square Enix's listings for the show or in its own booth recaps afterward; the activities above made up the game's Tokyo Game Show presence.
After Launch
The demo stayed available when the full game launched on October 22, 2026. On October 22 and 23, 2026, the Steam store page for the full game still offered the demo download, the PlayStation Store listed it as free to add to a library, the Xbox store offered it free, and Square Enix's Japanese launch notice linked the demo on all five platforms. Square Enix's launch announcements restate that demo save data carries over to the full game on all platforms.
Not Yet Detailed
As of October 23, 2026, Square Enix has not published the demo's download size in its announcements, and the Steam demo listing gives no storage figure. Square Enix has also not said how long the demo will stay available now that the full game is out. The demo listing also carries no Steam Deck rating of its own, while the full game is rated Steam Deck Verified; see System Requirements.
Continuing a demo save
Launch the full game using the same platform version and player profile as the demo. It detects the demo save and offers to carry the saved progress forward. Save in the demo before switching to the full game.
The Switch and Switch 2 editions use separate demo saves: a Switch demo save does not transfer into the Switch 2 edition, or the reverse.
The demo caps character levels at 15. Characters at that cap stop earning EXP inside the demo.
Vision Mastery Rank is capped at 5 in the demo. This is a separate limit from the character level cap of 15.
