Limit Bursts are powerful attacks a character unleashes once their limit gauge fills. Square Enix detailed the system on August 24, 2026. Staggering feeds two payoffs at once: a stagger fills a limit gauge, and staggering every enemy inside one turn opens a Resonance.
Filling the Limit Gauge
Each character carries a limit gauge, and it fills two ways. It advances when that character staggers an enemy, and it advances when that character takes damage. Because damage counts as a fill source, the gauge builds whether the party is winning exchanges or absorbing them, and a party tuned for staggering builds it faster on top of that.
Detail | Confirmed Value |
|---|---|
Gauge | One limit gauge per character |
Fill sources | Staggering an enemy, and taking damage |
Trigger | The Limit Burst becomes available once the gauge is full |
Effect types | Some deal heavy damage; others grant a boon that aids the rest of the battle |
Named example | Fel Meteor, unlocked for one unidentified character by an item in the Digital Deluxe pack; see Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses |
Limit Bursts and Resonance Attacks
The two showpiece moves in a battle run on separate rules. A Limit Burst belongs to the character and fires when that character's own gauge is full. A Resonance belongs to the equipped Vision and unlocks only when the party staggers every enemy on the field inside a single turn, with one Resonance permitted per sweeping stagger and no resource spent. The gauge rules live here; the sweeping stagger is explained at Stagger System and the ultimates themselves at Resonance Attacks.
Detail | Limit Bursts | Resonance Attacks |
|---|---|---|
Belongs to | The character | The equipped Vision |
Trigger | The character's limit gauge fills | Every enemy on the field staggered in one turn |
How it charges | Staggering an enemy, and taking damage; see Stagger System | Nothing charges. The trigger is a battle state, and firing costs no resource |
Effects | Heavy damage, or a boon lasting into the rest of the battle | Single-target damage, all-enemy damage, buffs, and heals |
Uses per opening | Not published | One per sweeping stagger |
The Gauge Outside Limit Bursts
The limit gauge also scales damage for at least one Vision. Square Enix published Onion Knight's ability kit on August 24, 2026, and his Fire, Wind and Earth magic deals more damage the more the limit gauge is filled. Whose gauge that reading tracks, and whether any other Vision scales the same way, has not been stated.
Not Yet Detailed
Square Enix has not published which characters carry which Limit Bursts, how large the gauge is or whether it splits into segments, how much a stagger or an incoming hit contributes, or whether the gauge carries over between battles. Fel Meteor is the only Limit Burst named so far, and its owner has not been identified. For the surrounding battle structure, see Combat.
