Safety Areas and Warp Terminals are the checkpoints that structure exploration in Echoes of Aincrad. They are easy to spot in the field as a pillar of light, and reaching one is usually the first objective when you arrive in an unfamiliar region.

The healing-crystal restore is the one players underuse. Crystals are limited-charge rather than consumable in the usual sense, so treating a checkpoint as a refill station changes how aggressively you can push the next stretch.
Because map data is gated behind checkpoints, exploration has a deliberate shape: push into unmapped ground, find the pillar of light, activate it, then use the newly revealed map to plan the rest of the area. The developers explicitly recommend dropping a pin on the map to keep a heading, and note that later quest areas have layouts complex enough that looking down at the field from a high vantage point is often the fastest way to work out a route.
Quest areas restrict which regions you can reach, so a checkpoint you cannot get to yet is a signal that the route opens later rather than that you have missed something.

Return to Town is the intended answer to running low on supplies mid-quest. Because your haul is preserved, there is no penalty for pulling out to restock, change equipment at the smithy, or rethink a build before the next attempt.
Once in town, warp commands jump directly to the four facilities that matter:

Opening the Start Quest screen at the Main Terminal refills the consumables in your Item Pouch from matching items in your Chest, up to the pouch's carrying capacity. Empty pouch slots are also filled with recovery consumables where available. The catch is that the Chest has to be holding copies already, so buying in bulk once is what makes the feature useful later.
Reaching high ground or deep water by routes the game did not intend can leave a character wedged in the terrain. The published fix is Force Relocation, found under Settings and then Gameplay Settings, which moves your character to a safe spot. It is worth knowing before it happens, since the alternative is reloading.
