Hex magic is Coen's primary supernatural tool during the day. Unlike his vampiric powers, which are biological and activate at night, hexes are inscriptions — bloody scars carved into Coen's skin that channel supernatural energy when activated. They function as the daytime equivalent of spells, giving Coen options beyond pure swordplay.
An offensive hex. Specific effects haven't been detailed in public reveals, but the name suggests a cloud-based attack — possibly blinding, poisoning, or area denial. It was listed among Coen's hex abilities during the Gamescom 2025 demo.
Another offensive hex. Again, full mechanics haven't been shown, but it likely involves fire or heat damage channeled through Coen's blood. The name ties into the Dawnwalker theme of blood being both a weapon and a liability.
A utility hex with investigation applications. Compel Soul lets Coen speak to certain corpses to extract information. Not every corpse can be questioned — the valid targets are marked by moths gathering around the body. This hex serves a detective-like function, letting players uncover details about murders, hidden locations, or character backstories by interrogating the dead.
Hexes consume activation charges, the same resource built up by landing successful attacks during combat. This creates a loop: fight well with your sword, earn charges, spend charges on hexes for bigger effects, then go back to building charges. You can't spam hexes without engaging in melee first.
The same activation charges also power execution moves, so players have to decide moment-to-moment whether to spend charges on a hex or save them for a finisher. This resource management adds tactical depth to what could otherwise be straightforward sword combat.
The two systems don't overlap. Hex magic is available during the day when Coen is in his human form. Vampiric powers — Shadowstep, Plane Shift, bite — take over at night. The Shared skill tree bridges the gap, but the core abilities are tied to the time of day. This split means players need to think about when to tackle specific challenges, since their toolset changes every sunrise and sunset.
