Activation Charges

Placed Acrid Dust as the Swordmastery stun listed as Dirty Trick, dated the Feral Mind absence, and added Dirty Trick to the ability table
Activation Charges are a resource displayed above Coen's health bar during combat. They are earned through successful offensive and defensive actions (attacking, parrying, blocking) and spent on Hex magic and other active abilities from the ability panel. The system creates a rhythm in combat where skilled play builds up charges that then enable devastating special abilities.
Charges accumulate through active participation in combat. Landing attacks, successfully parrying incoming strikes, and blocking blows all contribute. The directional combat system rewards precise play, and the charge generation rate reflects this: aggressive, skillful players who land parries and well-timed attacks build charges faster than those who rely on passive blocking.
Three actions build charges: landing hits, blocking successfully, and parrying. Charges are the only route to active abilities at all, which makes the resource less of a bonus layer and more of a hard gate. A player who never blocks or parries is not simply playing less efficiently, they are locked out of the ability panel for that fight.
Charges are spent from the active-ability panel. Any ability slotted there costs charges, whichever tree it came from, so the pool is shared between Witchcraft hexes, Swordmastery moves and the night-form vampire abilities rather than reserved for one discipline. Costs differ between abilities, which turns each fight into a choice between spending on cheap tactical options and saving for something heavier.
Ability | Tree | Note |
|---|---|---|
Burning Blood | Witchcraft | Damage over time on a single target |
Compel Soul | Witchcraft | The investigative hex, used to question the dead |
Life Lock | Witchcraft | Blocks incoming damage and reflects it back |
Artery Strike | Swordmastery | Critical strike with a chance of decapitating the target |
Broad Swing | Swordmastery | Area sweep that hits everything in range |
Vampirism | Bites an enemy for health, usable mid-combat from the ability panel | |
Dirty Trick | Swordmastery | Stuns and damages a target and leaves it vulnerable to active abilities. The stun shown as Acrid Dust in 2025 |
Two ability names long carried on this wiki need qualifying against the rosters documented since launch. Acrid Dust was the dust-throwing stun shown in the June 2025 gameplay reveal and described at the time as costing charges. It turned out to be a Swordmastery technique rather than a hex, and guides to the shipped game list that stun as Dirty Trick, an active ability that draws on the same pool. Feral Mind is named as an offensive spell in the publisher's own community bulletin question-and-answer, a first-party attestation, but it does not appear under that name in the shipped Witchcraft roster as of September 2026. See Skill Trees for the rosters as currently documented.
The Activation Charge system is the backbone of Dawnwalker's daytime combat loop. Without charges, Coen is limited to his sword and directional attacks. With charges, he gains access to magic that can turn a difficult fight. This creates a natural escalation pattern: fights begin as pure swordplay and gradually open up as the player earns resources for Hex abilities. The system also pairs with Rune Carving, since Hex abilities use HP as an additional cost, making resource management a constant consideration.
Activation Charges are not a daytime-only resource. Every active ability in the game draws on the same pool, including the night-side vampire abilities: Voracious Bite, for example, is used from the active-ability panel mid-fight and needs a charge to fire. What is tied to the human form is Hex magic itself, because the runes cut into Coen's arm seal over at night. The pool carries across the change of form; the abilities loaded into it do not.
Some abilities cost more than charges. A number of Witchcraft hexes and a few vampiric abilities also take a slice of Coen's health when cast, which is why health management and charge management are the same problem during a long daytime fight. Coen's health does not regenerate on its own by day.
A Perfect Block, landed inside the orange window on the block indicator, refunds activation charges as well as restoring stamina, so clean defence pays directly into the ability panel rather than only buying time.
Not every special move draws on the pool. Weapons of blue rarity and above carry a weapon art on its own cooldown, and the bracers worn at night carry claw arts the same way, so a fight can produce special moves even when charges are empty. See Combat for how the two systems sit together.
Three perks in the Swordmastery tree act directly on charges, which is one reason that tree is usually recommended even to players building around magic or the night form.
Perk | Effect On Charges |
|---|---|
Sustained Focus | Raises the number of charges Coen can hold |
Perfect Block | Restores stamina and charges on a clean directional block |
Walking Fortress | A Perfect Block restores a portion of Activation Charge. Taught by a manual rather than bought outright |
Equipment can feed the same pool. A legendary ring recovered from Aurelius's tower during the Home Sweet Home questline is documented as buffing both Witchcraft and Activation Charge statistics, which makes charge generation something a build can invest in through gear as well as through perks.
