Add boss fight preparation/strategy, Turning Slash input details, group damage context, Special Equipment Challenge, and new wikilinks
The Vessel of Dark Pursuit is a unique two-handed sword in Crimson Desert. It is classified as Abyss Gear and comes equipped with the Wound of Darkness abyss core, which adds three dark energy waves to the Turning Slash attack. This weapon is widely considered one of the best two-handed swords available in the early-to-mid game and remains competitive well into the late game with continued refinement.
The sword is obtained as a reward for defeating Antumbra's Sword, the boss of the Sanctum of Absolution. Because the sanctum can be accessed relatively early in the game, many players make it a priority stop to pick up this weapon before progressing further through the main story.

At 25 ATK with Crit Rate Lv. 1, the Vessel of Dark Pursuit hits significantly harder than most weapons available at the same point in the game. The built-in critical rate bonus means you do not need to spend Abyss Core slots on crit-boosting effects, freeing them up for other bonuses like damage reduction or elemental resistance.
The Vessel of Dark Pursuit is classified as Abyss Gear, meaning it comes with a pre-installed abyss core effect that cannot be removed. The Wound of Darkness core modifies the Turning Slash input (RB + RT on Xbox, R1 + R2 on PlayStation) by adding three waves of dark energy that extend outward from the swing arc. This is the same vertical slash move that Antumbra's Sword uses during the boss fight itself, so players who have fought the boss will recognize the attack pattern.
The dark energy waves deal additional damage in a line extending beyond the normal sword reach. This effectively turns Turning Slash into a ranged attack, making it useful for hitting multiple enemies lined up in a row or for dealing damage to targets just outside standard melee range. Given the density of enemies in Crimson Desert and how often encounters involve multiple opponents at once, the Wound of Darkness passive is almost guaranteed to increase your overall damage output in typical combat scenarios.
The Vessel of Dark Pursuit drops from Antumbra's Sword, the boss encounter at the Sanctum of Absolution. The sanctum is located in the southwest area of the Hernand region.
To reach the boss, players must first solve the sanctum's pillar puzzle to open the path forward. After clearing the puzzle, the boss arena becomes accessible. Antumbra's Sword is a challenging opponent that uses powerful two-handed sword attacks, including the same dark energy slash that the Vessel of Dark Pursuit grants to the player upon pickup.
Defeating the boss also awards a Sealed Abyss Artifact alongside the weapon. Both items are collected from the same encounter, making the Sanctum of Absolution one of the most rewarding early-game destinations.
Defeating Antumbra's Sword is no small task and requires careful preparation. Before entering the Sanctum of Absolution, players should ensure they have the following:
Healthy food supply: Bring cooked meals and healing items. Clear Soup and similar recipes provide reliable health recovery between attack windows.
Level 3 Focus: Invest Abyss Artifacts into the Focus node on the skill tree to unlock Focus Lv. 3. Higher Focus levels allow you to slow time more effectively, creating larger windows for counterattacks.
Blinding Flash Finisher: The Blinding Flash skill is highly effective against Antumbra's Sword. It can cancel the boss's Ground Thrust and triple Shadow Strike, giving you a safe opening to deal damage.
Palmer Pills: Keep at least three Palmer Pills in your inventory. These function as a revival item, letting you continue the fight if you get downed during the encounter.
Refined equipment: Upgrade your weapons and armor to at least refinement tier three or four before attempting this boss. The damage check is significant, and under-leveled gear will make the fight considerably longer and more punishing.
Antumbra's Sword is an aggressive boss that combines swift two-handed sword combos with dark energy projectiles. The boss frequently summons mirror images of itself and shoots energy waves in multiple directions, making positioning critical throughout the fight.
Use the arena pillar for cover. The boss arena contains a central pillar that can be used to block incoming energy wave attacks. When you see the boss charge up ranged slashes (the sword glows and dips toward the ground), move behind the pillar rather than trying to dodge sideways through multiple wave patterns.
Punish teleport windows. Every time Antumbra's Sword teleports through dark smoke, there is a brief materialization window where it cannot attack or block. Watch the direction of the smoke trail to predict where the boss will reappear, then dash toward that spot and attack immediately.
Dodge full combos, then counter. Focus on dodging entire combo chains rather than trying to interrupt individual swings. The boss frequently chains attacks that bait early reactions. Once the full combo ends, you have a window to land heavy hits and follow up with stab attacks for bleed damage.
Manage stamina carefully. Stamina management is the most important factor in this fight. Running out of stamina mid-encounter leaves you unable to evade the boss's high-damage slam attacks, which can end an attempt quickly. Save enough stamina for at least one emergency dodge at all times.
The Wound of Darkness effect on Turning Slash makes it an excellent opener against groups of enemies. Approach from range, trigger the slash, and the dark energy waves will hit targets before you even close into melee distance.
Pair the Vessel of Dark Pursuit with Abyss Cores that boost raw damage or attack speed. Since the weapon already has Crit Rate Lv. 1 built in, you can focus your core slots on other offensive or defensive effects.
The weapon's high base ATK of 25 means it scales well with refinement. Investing refinement materials early pays off because each level adds a meaningful damage increase to an already strong base.
For boss fights, use the Wound of Darkness waves to chip damage during phases where the boss creates distance. The ranged component of Turning Slash lets you maintain pressure without overcommitting to a close-range combo.

The Vessel of Dark Pursuit has an associated Special Equipment Challenge that requires the player to defeat 100 enemies while the weapon is equipped. Completing this challenge contributes toward the Grand Collector of Arms achievement. Because the Wound of Darkness passive excels at clearing groups, this challenge tends to complete naturally through regular gameplay without needing to grind specifically for it.
