The Thorn of Dark Pursuit is a unique spear and two-handed weapon in Crimson Desert. It is widely considered one of the coolest-looking spears in the game, featuring a dark, ornate design that reflects its origins in the Abyss. The weapon drops exclusively from the Antumbra of the Spear, one of the more challenging Antumbra boss fights available in the open world.
Like all two-handed weapons, the Thorn of Dark Pursuit occupies both hand slots and prevents the use of an off-hand item. In exchange, it provides higher raw damage output than comparable one-handed options. Players can further customize its performance through the Refining System and by socketing Abyss Cores into its available slots. The weapon comes with the Warden of Darkness Abyss Gear pre-equipped, giving it a built-in AoE finisher ability right out of the box.

The Thorn of Dark Pursuit is dropped by the Antumbra of the Spear, a powerful boss found at the Sanctum of Revelation. This sanctum is located at the northeastern point of Serpent March, just south of Demeniss. Unlike most other Antumbra encounters, where you receive the weapon reward upon finishing the sanctum restoration, the Thorn of Dark Pursuit must be physically picked up from a location that gets marked on your map after defeating the boss.
The Antumbra of the Spear fight is widely regarded as one of the more difficult Antumbra encounters. The boss itself is dangerous, but the real challenge comes from the spectral spearmen that spawn throughout the fight. These ghostly soldiers zoom toward you with their spears and are extremely invasive; they will repeatedly interrupt your Focus Mode if you are trying to charge attacks in melee range. Staying at close quarters without a plan for dealing with the adds can quickly lead to death.
Recommended approach: use ranged attacks. The Antumbra of the Spear is notably vulnerable to ranged damage. The most effective strategy involves using Focus Shot, ideally fully upgraded to Focus Charge Shot. When fully charged, Focus Charge Shot sends out a flurry of projectiles that rapidly build both damage and stun on the boss. Once the stun threshold is reached, the boss staggers and opens up a large DPS window where you can close in for heavy melee combos.
General tips for the fight:
Keep your distance and let the spectral spearmen come to you rather than charging into the boss.
Focus Charge Shot builds stun faster than any melee combo against this particular boss.
When the boss staggers, rush in for your strongest melee abilities, then back off before the adds respawn.
Bring plenty of healing items; the spectral spearmen can chip away at your health even if you are avoiding the boss itself.
If you have Abyss Cores that boost ranged damage or stun buildup, equip them before the fight.
The Thorn of Dark Pursuit comes with the Warden of Darkness Abyss Gear already socketed. This gear summons spectral knights (the same ghostly soldiers that appear during the boss fight) to attack nearby enemies. Warden of Darkness is a finisher proc, meaning it only activates on a killing blow. This makes the Thorn of Dark Pursuit particularly effective for open-world clearing and AoE-heavy builds, since every kill can trigger a wave of spectral knights that chain into additional kills.
Players who prefer a different playstyle can visit a Witch to remove the Warden of Darkness and replace it with a different Abyss Gear of their choosing. However, the synergy between a long-reach spear and a finisher-based AoE proc is considered one of the stronger combinations for general exploration and mob clearing.
The Attack Speed Level 1 bonus helps offset the naturally slower swing speed of two-handed weapons. The Thorn of Dark Pursuit can hit more frequently than other spears in its class, giving it a distinct advantage in extended fights.
Pair it with Abyss Cores that add raw damage or elemental effects for maximum output.
In AoE scenarios, try to land killing blows with the spear's wide sweeping attacks to trigger the Warden of Darkness proc as often as possible.
The spear's long reach pairs well with kiting strategies. You can poke enemies from outside their melee range and retreat before they can retaliate.
The boss at the Sanctum of Revelation is one of the more difficult sanctum encounters. The following tips can help:
The boss can two or three-shot players with underleveled armor. Prioritize upgrading your defensive gear before attempting this fight.
Beware of the boss's flash/teleport combo: after knocking you down, it will teleport and repeat the attack four to five times in succession, which is often lethal.
Bring plenty of healing items (meals and palmar pills) and be ready to spam them during the teleport combo.
You can visit the Sanctum before reaching it in the witch's questline, but you will not be able to cleanse it until you progress the quest. The weapon can still be obtained regardless.
The Warden of Darkness gear excels in crowd control situations. When triggered as a finisher, it spawns spirits that attack in all directions, dealing significant AoE damage. This makes it particularly effective when liberating forts or fighting groups of enemies. However, the spirits spread their damage across multiple targets, making the gear less effective against single bosses compared to focused damage options.
