Pywelll is the continent where Crimson Desert takes place, a seamless open world filled with natural beauty. Here you'll find both vast wilderness stretching as far as the eye can see and bustling cities inhabited by residents from all walks of life. As you explore, you may also come across ancient ruins and more just waiting to be discovered.
The playable area of Pywelll is at least twice the size of Skyrim and larger than the map of Red Dead Redemption 2. Based on these comparisons, Crimson Desert features one of the most ambitious open worlds in gaming. The fully seamless world allows players to travel between all five regions without loading screens.
But for all its beauty, danger lurks in all corners of Pywelll. Rival factions clash in deadly conflicts, and hostile forces roam the lands. High above, in the realm known as the Abyss, a growing mystical imbalance threatens to push the world toward chaos.
Fragments of the Abyss are falling to the lands below and lie scattered across Pywelll. These remnants carry dangerous power, and dark forces seek to exploit them. Defeating those that seek to use these fragments and restoring the Abyss's broken balance will be an important part of your journey.
Pywelll is made up of five regions, each holding stories to be told and discoveries waiting to be found. The main quest line follows Kliff's journey through the central story, but questing in Pywelll goes far beyond following a single path.
The five regions are: Hernand (both a region and major city), Paleoon (homeland of the Greymanes), Demeniss (politically charged following its king's coma), Delesyia, and the Crimson Desert itself. Each region offers unique environments, factions, and challenges.
In Pywelll, exploration is more than travel, it's discovery. Whether it's finding undiscovered points of interest, hidden treasures, or simply a vantage point to take in the view, there is much that will draw your curiosity to wander. Sights, secrets, and surprises along the way catch your attention with no strict path, you can pretty much go anywhere that captures your interest.
The continent is full of other tales, interesting encounters, and hidden challenges that all shape your adventure, and you're free to take them on in any order you choose.
A trusty steed provides reliable travel across Pywelll, but Kliff himself can climb and even glide across distances using the Crow Wings ability. Further into your journey, you'll also gain access to a missile-firing mech and a dragon that will allow you to soar high above the world.
Traces of the Abyss you discover will open up fast travel locations, making it easier to revisit and explore the areas of Pywelll you've discovered.
Paleoon is the homeland of the Greymanes, once unified under the great leader Gian. With Gian's death, the region has been plunged into chaos as a bloody battle unfolds between the Greymanes who fight to uphold his will and the Black Bear forces that seek to destroy his legacy.
Your journey begins in Paleoon, reuniting the surviving Greymanes to rebuild the faction and reclaim your homeland.
Hernand is both a region and a city where much of the early game takes place. The city is populated by a range of fantasy races including giants and antlered elf-like beings among the crowds.
Key locations include Hernand Castle, where Kliff infiltrates using Hernandian Banquet Attire to access the Abyss. The Reed Devil terrorizes the citizens of Hernand as the bogeyman called 'The Devil of the Reed Fields.'
Kweiden is a harsh land featuring snow-blasted mountains, visible from across the entire continent. Also known as the 'barren Desert' due to its inhospitably cold conditions, Kweiden is the homeland of protagonist Kliff Macduff.
Within Kweiden lies Ulsrund, the land of the wolf. The region's extreme conditions have produced hardy inhabitants who have learned to survive in one of Pywelll's most challenging environments.
Suspended high above Pywelll are the Abyss Islands, floating landmasses that can be accessed through portals unlocked with mysterious Abyss Artifacts. Players can take to the skies and explore these islands that majestically float amongst the clouds.
Venturing into the Abyss's mysterious realms will put your wits to the test as you uncover its secrets and work to restore its broken balance.
Many of Pywelll's quests revolve around the factions, houses, and organizations scattered across the continent. Some of these quests are grand with large-scale objectives like reclaiming fortresses and taking on formidable foes, while others are quieter, requiring you to help residents with everyday tasks.
From the outset, some factions will be friendly and may give you missions. Others, however, are hostile forces who are residing in or occupying areas. Liberating locations from enemy forces will restore them to their rightful factions and make the regions safe to travel.
The world of Pywelll is rich with knowledge waiting to be uncovered, from information about its inhabitants and wildlife to skills, items, and more. This knowledge can be acquired in many ways: by interacting with characters and objects, exploring new areas, and even observing from afar.
The knowledge you gather may provide clues to completing quests, open paths to acquiring new skills, or offer helpful guidance on your journey.
The technology of Pywelll is primarily medieval, with new technological advancements ushering in a new age of warfare thanks to the invention of pistols, cannons, and hand-mounted cannons. Players can use these firearms alongside traditional weapons.
Along with the invention of new weaponry was the discovery of Alchemy, an art allowing practitioners to imbue weapons with additional abilities. The Dwarves have even engineered a combat mech with machine guns, rockets, and EMP pulses.
