Potato is an Apprentice Farmer tier farmland crop that grows in all four seasons, making it one of the most dependable vegetables on your farm. Seeds become available once you complete the Apprentice Farmer certification with Graminova at the Happiness Seed Shop.
Potato serves a dual role in Starsand Island. Selling raw potatoes provides a reliable all-season income, and processing them at the Brewing Barrel produces Vinegar, one of the key fermented cooking ingredients required by several mid-game and late-game recipes. Potato can also be processed at the Separator into Vegetable Juice, the same base ingredient produced by any vegetable crop. On top of that, Potato is a direct ingredient in four cooking recipes: Baked Potato, Silken Potato Mash, Tomato Beef Stew, and Braised Crab Pot.
Because Potato grows year-round and feeds into both cooking and brewing, it is one of the most versatile crops in the game. Keeping a steady supply of Potato growing at all times ensures you never run out of Vinegar or the raw ingredient needed for several high-value dishes.

Potato Seeds are sold at the Happiness Seed Shop in Starsand Town for 60g per bag. The shop is run by Graminova and is open from 10 AM to 9 PM. You can interact with the cash register directly without needing to speak to Graminova first.
Potato is an Apprentice Farmer crop, so you must complete the Apprentice Farmer certification before its seeds appear in the shop inventory. The certification quest is available early in the game through Graminova and requires planting, watering, and harvesting a few crops. Once unlocked, Potato Seeds are sold year-round regardless of the current season, so you can stockpile before any season begins.
At the Senior Farmer tier, you can build a Grinder station that converts harvested crops back into seeds. This means you can turn some of your Potato harvest into new Potato Seeds instead of buying them from the shop, effectively removing the 60g seed cost from future plantings.
Potato grows on standard farmland. Till a patch of soil with your hoe, plant the Potato Seed, and water it. Growth time is 2 days of real time, starting from the moment the seed goes into the ground. Once the plant matures, walk up to it and harvest by hand to collect 4 Potato.
Potato can also be grown in a Planting Box, which is unlocked at the Junior Farmer tier. Planting Boxes allow you to grow crops anywhere, including indoors. This gives you flexibility if you want to keep a small Potato supply growing inside your house or near your kitchen area.
Potato is a single-harvest crop. After you pick it, the plant is gone and you need to replant a new seed. This is different from Trellis crops like Cucumber or Tomato, which can be harvested multiple times from a single planting.
You can speed up Potato growth using fertilizers. A single application of Ripening Fertilizer I (Apprentice Farmer, 15g per 5 bags) instantly advances growth by 8 hours. Ripening Fertilizer II (Junior Farmer) advances by 13 hours, and Ripening Fertilizer III (Intermediate Farmer) advances by 25 hours, which is more than enough to instantly complete a Potato crop in one application.
Placing Bumblebee hives near your Potato plots also boosts growth speed significantly. Combined with sprinklers for automatic watering, this makes Potato farming almost entirely passive.
Potato sells for 33g per unit at Zerine's General Store. Since each harvest produces 4 Potato, a single harvest sells for 132g total, resulting in a net profit of 72g after the 60g seed cost.
On a gold-per-day basis, Potato earns 36 g/day, which places it in the mid-range of Apprentice Farmer crops. Cucumber (Trellis, multi-harvest) earns more per unit at 66g but requires a Trellis. Among standard farmland crops at the Apprentice tier, Potato offers a strong balance of profit and convenience thanks to its all-season availability.
The Merchant Ship pays 200% of the normal sell price when it docks, effectively doubling Potato's sell value to 66g per unit. If you have excess Potato that you do not need for cooking or Vinegar production, selling during a Merchant Ship visit is the best option.
Potato can be processed at two different stations, each producing a different cooking ingredient.
The Brewing Barrel converts 1 Potato into 1 Vinegar. The Brewing Barrel is unlocked at the Junior Farmer tier (blueprint from the Happiness Seed Shop). Unlike the Separator, the Brewing Barrel works on a timer and takes several in-game hours to complete each batch.
Vinegar is a fermented cooking ingredient used in recipes like Sweet and Sour Pork (438g sell), Sweet and Sour Cabbage, and other dishes. Because Potato is the only crop that produces Vinegar, growing Potato is essential if you want to cook any recipe that calls for it.
The Separator processes Potato (along with any other vegetable) into Vegetable Juice. The Separator is available early in the game and provides instant processing. Vegetable Juice is used in many recipes including Veggie Noodles, Stir-Fried Vegetables with Meat, and several others. However, since Potato is the sole source of Vinegar, it is usually more efficient to use cheaper vegetables like Cabbage or Water Spinach for Vegetable Juice and reserve Potato for Vinegar production.
Four cooking recipes use raw Potato directly as an ingredient. These range from a simple campfire dish to high-value stews.
Recipe | Ingredients | Energy | Sell Price | Unlock |
|---|---|---|---|---|
1x Potato | +33 | 35g | Exploration | |
2x Potato, 1x Fine Salt | +95 | 197g | Aureleaf Kitchen | |
1x Fiddler Crab, 1x Greasyback Shrimp, 4x Fowl, 2x Potato | +128 | 363g | Senior Angler Trial | |
2x Tomato, 2x Potato, 3x Beef | +155 | 498g | Aureleaf Kitchen |
Baked Potato is one of the simplest recipes in the game, requiring just 1 Potato and no other ingredients. It is discovered through Exploration and restores 33 Energy, making it a handy early-game food when better recipes are not yet available. It also works as a decent gift for several villagers.
Silken Potato Mash is the best dedicated Potato recipe for everyday use. It requires 2 Potato and 1 Fine Salt, restores 95 Energy, and sells for 197g. The recipe is purchased from the Aureleaf Kitchen. Since Fine Salt is cheap and easy to produce, Silken Potato Mash offers a strong return on your Potato investment.
Tomato Beef Stew is the highest-value recipe that uses Potato, selling for 498g and restoring 155 Energy. It requires 2 Tomato, 2 Potato, and 3 Beef, so it depends on having a reliable meat supply from ranching as well as Tomato crops. This is an excellent late-game cooking target for profit.
Braised Crab Pot combines seafood, fowl, and Potato into a dish that restores 128 Energy and sells for 363g. It also grants the Flow Fishing buff, which is useful for anglers. The recipe unlocks from the Senior Angler Trial.
Because Potato is the sole source of Vinegar via the Brewing Barrel, any recipe that uses Vinegar indirectly depends on your Potato supply. Notable Vinegar recipes include:
Sweet and Sour Pork (3x Pork, 4x Flour, 4x Sugar, 4x Vinegar): sells for 438g, restores 143 Energy. One of the highest-value cooking recipes in the game.
Sweet and Sour Cabbage and other dishes that call for Vinegar as an ingredient.
Keeping a steady rotation of Potato into the Brewing Barrel is important for any player who wants access to these high-tier recipes.
Like all crops, Potato has an Everlasting (Immortal) seed variant. Crops grown from Everlasting Potato Seeds produce Potato indefinitely after each harvest without replanting, and they ignore season restrictions entirely. Since Potato already grows in all seasons, the main benefit of Everlasting Seeds is eliminating the need to replant and rebuy seeds.
There are several ways to obtain Everlasting Potato Seeds:
Eternal Blessings skill: A passive perk at the Senior Farmer tier. Every crop harvest has a random chance to drop an Everlasting Seed of that crop type. At level 3, the drop rate becomes fairly reliable.
Creamy Seeds buff: Eating Mirthshroom Soup (crafted from 2x Mirthshroom at the Campfire) grants a temporary buff that increases the chance of dropping Everlasting Seeds when harvesting. At max stacking, you can expect roughly one Everlasting Seed every 5 harvests.
Treasure Chests: Occasionally found by tilling and untilling soil on your homestead. These chests sometimes contain Everlasting Seeds, though most of the time they award coins.
Stardust Grinder: At the Expert Farmer tier, you unlock the Stardust Grinder which can craft Everlasting Seeds directly.
Once you have Everlasting Potato Seeds, every subsequent harvest is pure profit since you never need to buy or replant seeds again. This eliminates the 60g seed cost and makes Potato significantly more efficient for long-term Vinegar production and cooking. If you dig up an Everlasting Potato crop, the Everlasting Seed is returned to your inventory.
Potato is one of twelve all-season crops, meaning it grows during Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter without interruption. Take advantage of this by keeping Potato plots running year-round, especially during Winter when fewer crops are available.
Reserve most of your Potato harvest for Vinegar production at the Brewing Barrel rather than selling raw. Vinegar is needed for Sweet and Sour Pork (438g) and other high-value dishes that multiply the value of your Potato many times over.
Use cheaper vegetables like Cabbage or Water Spinach for Vegetable Juice at the Separator. Potato is more valuable as Vinegar since it is the only crop that produces it.
Keep a small supply of raw Potato for Silken Potato Mash (197g sell, +95 Energy). It only costs 2 Potato and 1 Fine Salt, making it one of the best profit-per-ingredient recipes available at the Aureleaf Kitchen.
Baked Potato is a solid early-game food option. One Potato, no extra ingredients, 33 Energy restored. Cook a batch whenever you are running low on stamina food before you unlock better recipes.
Build multiple Brewing Barrels if you cook Vinegar-heavy recipes regularly. Each barrel processes one batch at a time and fermentation takes several in-game hours, so having two or three running in parallel keeps your Vinegar supply steady.
Sell excess Potato to the Merchant Ship for double value (66g per unit instead of 33g). The Merchant Ship docks periodically and pays 200% of normal sell prices.
Prioritize getting Everlasting Potato Seeds from the Eternal Blessings skill or Mirthshroom Soup buff. Eliminating the 60g seed cost from every planting cycle adds up quickly when you are growing Potato continuously.
