Pets are animal companions that can be registered and taken along on your journey through Pywel in Crimson Desert. Pets are a subset of the broader Lifeforms system, specifically the tameable dogs and cats found throughout settlements. Both dogs and cats can be tamed by building trust through petting and feeding. Once registered, a pet follows you during exploration, assists in the combat system by automatically looting items from defeated enemies, and serves as a permanent companion for the rest of the game.
Animals can be found roaming settlements where humans live, especially bigger cities like Greymane Camp and the surrounding towns. They appear in different locations depending on the time of day, so check back at different hours if you do not see the breed you are looking for.
To register an animal as your companion, you need to build a strong bond with it by gaining its trust. There are two primary methods for building trust with wild animals: petting them repeatedly and giving them their favorite food. Both actions contribute to a trust meter that appears on-screen whenever you interact with a wild animal, showing your progress toward taming it.
Once the trust meter reaches its maximum value (100 trust), a prompt appears allowing you to register the animal. Press Square on PlayStation 5 or E on PC to complete the registration and add the animal as your companion. You can register multiple animals and manage them through the inventory menu, switching your active pet at any time.
Every wild animal starts at 0 trust. You need 100 trust to register an animal as your pet. Trust is earned through two interactions: petting and feeding.
Petting an animal grants +5 trust per interaction. You can earn up to 25 trust per in-game day from petting alone (five interactions). This costs nothing and can be done whenever you find the animal in a settlement.
You can feed an animal up to 3 times per in-game day. The trust gained depends on the quality of food offered. Dogs eat any type of meat, while cats prefer milk.
Food Item | Pet Type | Trust per Feed | Max Daily Trust (3 Feeds) |
|---|---|---|---|
Tough Meat | Dog | +10 | +30 |
Fine Meat | Dog | +35 | +105 |
Milk | Cat | Varies | Varies |
Meat can be purchased at the Grocer's Shop or Butchery in Hernand, located south of the inn. Using Fine Meat is the fastest way to tame a dog, as three feeds of Fine Meat in a single day provide +105 trust, enough to exceed the 100 trust threshold on their own.
Once an animal reaches 100 trust, put the animal down and hold Square (PlayStation) or E (PC) to select the "Take in" prompt. The animal is permanently registered as your pet from that point forward.
The Fang Without a Master faction quest introduces pet mechanics to players who have not yet tamed an animal through the open-world trust system. This quest walks you through the process of bonding with and registering a companion, making it a good starting point for understanding how pets work.
A first pet dog can also be acquired during a main quest involving city festivities. This provides an early opportunity to adopt a companion without needing to gather food or spend multiple in-game days building trust.
Registered pets provide several practical advantages during gameplay. Understanding what your companion brings to the table helps you get the most out of the pet system.
Exploration companion: Your registered pet follows you while exploring the open world of Pywel. The pet stays close to your character and travels with you across all regions.
Combat looting: Pets assist during combat encounters by automatically looting items from defeated enemies. This means you do not have to manually pick up every item drop during or after a fight, which is especially useful during large-scale battles with multiple opponents.
Permanent companion: Once registered, a pet stays with you permanently. There is no risk of losing a registered pet through normal gameplay.
Multiple pets: You can register more than one animal. All registered companions are managed through the inventory menu, where you can switch your active pet, review their equipment, and check their health status.
Pets can sustain injuries during combat encounters. An injured pet is unable to run and will move slowly until healed. To restore your pet's health, you must first clear all enemies from the immediate area, then use Force Palm (specifically the Healing variant from Kliff's skill tree) to heal your companion and get them back to full mobility.
You can also equip pet armor to increase your pet's defensive capabilities and reduce how often they get hurt in battle. Pet armor comes in different tiers and can be found as loot, crafted, or purchased from merchants. Keeping your pet armored is especially important in tougher regions where enemies deal high damage, since an injured pet that cannot run will significantly slow down your exploration.
There are seven pet breeds in Crimson Desert: five dogs and two cats. All breeds offer the same core benefits (following, auto-looting), but each has a distinct appearance and personality. The complete list of tameable lifeforms is shown below.
Breed | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
Dog | A gentle giant despite its massive size. The Boarhand is the largest dog breed in Pywel and can be found in settlements across the continent. | |
Dog | Medium-sized dog with a short, broad muzzle and short but solid, muscular legs. Commonly found in southern settlements. | |
Dog | Renowned for its fierce loyalty and high intelligence. The Jindo is a popular guard dog across the continent and can be encountered throughout Pywel. | |
Dog | Similar build to the Floppy-Eared variety but with erect, pointed ears. Found primarily in southern regions. | |
Dog | Elegant appearance with a slender build. Possesses strong hunting instincts and remarkable speed. Found everywhere except Pailune. | |
Cat | Long, thick fur with a waterproof coat. Known for excellent fishing abilities. Prefers milk over meat and is found everywhere except the Crimson Desert region. | |
Cat | The most common feline in Pywel. Comes in various coat colors and patterns. Prefers milk and can be found everywhere except the Crimson Desert region. |
Stock up on Fine Meat from the Butchery in Hernand before visiting settlements. Three Fine Meat feeds in one day give +105 trust, which is enough to register a dog immediately.
Combine petting and feeding in the same day to maximize trust gains. Five pets (+25) plus three Fine Meat feeds (+105) yield +130 trust in a single in-game day.
Check settlements at different times of day if you cannot find a specific breed. Animals roam to different spots depending on the hour.
Equip pet armor before heading into dangerous areas. Injured pets cannot run, which slows down your exploration significantly.
Use Healing Force Palm as soon as your pet takes damage. Keeping your companion healthy ensures they can keep looting for you during extended fights.
