Guard right before being hit to block the enemy attack with a perfect Parry. A successful Parry negates all damage from the attack and can stagger the attacker, creating an opening for a counterattack.
Parry is part of the Keen Senses progression within the Spirit (Green) skill tree. For Kliff, it is available from the beginning of the game through the Keen Senses line. Damiane and Oongka must unlock the Keen Senses skill in their own respective skill trees before Parry becomes available. Each character learns Parry independently.
To perform a Parry, press the Guard button (L1 on PlayStation, LB on Xbox, or Ctrl on keyboard) right before an enemy's attack connects. The timing window is tight, requiring the input within a fraction of a second before impact. Holding the Guard button passively does not trigger a Parry; the press must occur at the precise moment the attack is about to land.
A successful Parry is confirmed by a distinct metallic sound effect and a green visual flash. The enemy is pushed backward and frozen briefly for roughly two seconds, during which they are completely vulnerable. This creates enough time to land several melee strikes or begin a full combo chain.
Damage Negation: A perfect Parry blocks 100% of the incoming damage, unlike a standard guard which still chips away at health.
Stamina and Spirit Recovery: A successful Parry restores both Stamina and Spirit, making it a powerful resource management tool during extended fights.
Stagger Buildup: Parrying fills the enemy's stagger meter. Against bosses, repeated successful Parries can trigger a full stagger state, opening them up for massive damage.
Counter Window: The two-second freeze after a successful Parry guarantees that follow-up attacks will land. Skills like Turning Slash are ideal follow-ups.
Most standard melee weapon attacks from enemies can be Parried regardless of what weapon the player is using. Parrying works with shields, one-handed weapons, two-handed weapons, and even bare fists. However, grab attacks cannot be Parried and must be dodged instead. Attacks that display a red glint indicator also cannot be Parried, though they can still be blocked with a standard guard using a shield.
Hold the Guard button defensively between Parry attempts. If the timing is slightly off, a standard block will still reduce incoming damage rather than taking the hit fully.
Practice Parry timing against weaker enemies with predictable attack patterns before attempting it against bosses.
Watch the enemy's weapon hand rather than their body for more accurate timing cues.
Parrying mid-combo is possible and often easier than Parrying the opening attack, because subsequent strikes in an enemy combo follow predictable rhythms.
Against bosses, Parry is one of the fastest ways to build the stagger meter. Combine it with Force Palm strikes during the counter window for maximum stagger contribution.
Pair Parry with Counter for an advanced defensive playstyle: Counter triggers when you press R1 just before being hit, dealing bonus damage while also blocking the attack.
Keen Senses: The parent skill progression that unlocks Parry.
Counter: An offensive-defensive alternative that deals damage while blocking.
Backstep: Another Keen Senses upgrade that provides evasive dodging.
Shield Bash: Kliff's shield-based offensive guard that pairs well with Parry.
Turning Slash: A strong follow-up attack after a successful Parry.
Parry is the highest-skill defensive option in the game. The timing window is tight, but a successful Parry is more rewarding than a standard block or dodge because it staggers the attacker. Practice against predictable enemies first before using it against bosses. Parry works on almost every physical attack in the game.
