Purchase from a witch's shop under the "Buy" section. Witches such as Elowen (the Witch of Wisdom) in Hernand stock Abyss Gear blueprints. You must unlock witches by progressing through the main story. The Hermit Witch (Sylvia) is unlocked first during Chapter 3 but can only embed and extract gears. Elowen, the Witch of Wisdom, unlocked in Chapter 5 after the "Missing Seal" quest, is the first witch who can sell blueprints and craft Abyss Gears.
After purchasing this blueprint, open your inventory and "read" it to learn the recipe. Once learned, visit any witch and select "Craft Abyss Gear" to create Shred I. The blueprint also enables Synthesis of higher tiers (Level II and III) by combining two copies of the previous tier.
This blueprint unlocks the ability to craft the Shred Abyss Gear series, which increases Critical Rate against cloth armor when embedded in equipment.
Owning this blueprint is required before you can synthesize any tier of the Shred I series. Without the blueprint, the "Craft Abyss Gear" menu at any witch will not show the Shred option. You can also attempt Special Synthesis (available by pressing R2/RT in the Craft Abyss Gear menu) to combine any two random Abyss Gears for a chance at a random result, including Greater variants. The chance of producing a Greater Abyss Gear through Special Synthesis is approximately 4%.
Blueprints are one-time purchases. Once learned, the recipe is permanently available at all witches.
If you find duplicate Abyss Gears of the same type as drops, having the blueprint lets you combine them into stronger versions through Synthesis.
Check each witch's shop regularly, as different witches may stock different blueprints.
