Major expansion: added geography and layout, full quest arc breakdown table, detailed boss strategies, enemy info, loot and farming section, nearby points of interest, and preparation table
Fort Perwin is a fortified military outpost in the Hernand region, built and operated by House Roberts. Originally constructed to monitor the growing bandit problem in southwestern Hernand, the fort has since been seized by the Bleed Bandits, who now occupy its barracks, infirmary, and artillery positions. A mysterious red smoke blankets the fortress, generated by a supernatural entity known as the Crimson Nightmare. Players travel to Fort Perwin during the Continuing Concern arc of the House Roberts faction questline, where they must liberate the fort and destroy the Nightmare to restore order to the region.
Beyond its role in the main faction quest, Fort Perwin is also one of the better early-game farming spots in Hernand. The Bleed Bandits respawn regularly, drop sellable equipment including the Scarlet Blades Gas Mask, and the surrounding crates contain free cooking ingredients. Several points of interest sit within walking distance of the fort, including an Ancient Ruins puzzle and the Precipice of Echoes.
Fort Perwin sits to the southwest of the city of Hernand, directly south of The Witchwoods. The approach from Hernand leads south through Perwin Quarry and Perwin Gate before reaching the fort itself. A small staging camp outside the main walls provides a place to rest, cook food, sharpen weapons at the grindstone, and meditate to replenish Spirit before heading inside. Crates near this camp contain free vegetables and ingredients useful for cooking.
During The Crimson Nightmare quest, three occupied sections of the fort must be liberated before the boss encounter begins. Each section has an occupation gauge that depletes as players clear out the Bleed Bandits within it.
Barracks: The sleeping quarters and main garrison of the fort. Packed with melee-focused Bleed Bandits.
Infirmary: A medical wing that has been repurposed by the bandits. Clearing it contributes to the liberation progress.
Artillery Unit: The fort's artillery positions, manned by bandits operating ranged weaponry. Liberating this area neutralizes the fort's defensive emplacements.
Several related locations form a cluster around Fort Perwin, all of which factor into the Veil of the Red Smoke follow-up quest:
Sub-Area | Description |
|---|---|
The main entrance approach to the fort, guarded by Bleed Bandits. | |
A detention area near the fort used to hold captives. Must be cleared during Veil of the Red Smoke. | |
A mining site along the approach road from Hernand. Bandits have taken control of the quarry operations. | |
A merchant outpost near the fort that has been overrun. Clearing it restores access to the area. |
The Scholastone Archive can also be found to the southwest of Hernand, near the fort. The Precipice of Echoes Ancient Ruins site sits across the river to the southeast, at the base of the Mountain of Frozen Souls.
Fort Perwin is the focal point of the Continuing Concern arc, the second of three quest arcs in the House Roberts faction questline. The arc becomes available after completing the Estate in Dismay arc and progressing the main story to Chapter 4. It consists of four sequential quests:
Quest | Objective | Rewards |
|---|---|---|
Travel to Bluemont Manor and speak with Leon Roberts about the red smoke rising from Fort Perwin. | 2,660 Camp Funds | |
Liberate the fort's Barracks, Infirmary, and Artillery Unit, then defeat the Crimson Nightmare boss. | Freya's Elixir x1, Apollonia's Lesser Elixir x2, Meliara's Lesser Elixir x2, Abyss Artifact x1, +100 Hernandian Contribution | |
Clear the four surrounding sub-areas: Perwin Gate, Perwin Quarry, Perwin Trading Post, and Perwin Prison Camp. These can be tackled in any order. | Progression only (no item rewards) | |
Dissipated Smoke | Report to Count Roberts at Frowde Camp near Hook Rapids, northeast of Hernand, to conclude the arc. | Hernandian Contribution |
Completing the full Continuing Concern arc contributes a significant amount of Hernandian Contribution toward the Hernand Contribution Shop rewards. The Abyss Artifact received from the Crimson Nightmare quest is particularly valuable, as Abyss Artifacts are needed to unlock advanced abilities in the skill tree.
The Crimson Nightmare is a supernatural boss that appears at the center of Fort Perwin after the three internal areas have been liberated. Unlike flesh-and-blood enemies, the Nightmare is an ethereal entity surrounded by a persistent red smoke cloud. It has a health bar and a yellow stagger gauge beneath it. The red smoke inflicts a Confusion status effect on anyone standing in it, dealing continuous damage over time.
Crimson Fog: A persistent area of red smoke that surrounds the Nightmare at all times. Without fog protection, this deals constant damage to the player.
Crimson Dive: The Nightmare launches into the air and slams the ground, potentially knocking the player down. Dodge sideways when it begins its ascent.
Crushing Shot: Winds up and strikes the ground, sending a cone-shaped projectile forward. Jump at the moment of impact to avoid the shockwave.
Because the Crimson Nightmare is not a physical creature, standard melee attacks have no effect while it is airborne and shrouded in fog. Players must use one of three techniques to fill the stagger gauge and bring the core crashing to the ground.
Method 1: Force Palm (recommended for most players). Stand beneath the floating Nightmare, jump, and use Force Palm (R3). Each successful hit fills roughly 25% of the stagger gauge, so four clean hits will bring it down. Once staggered, the core drops to the ground and becomes completely vulnerable to regular melee attacks for several seconds. Force Palm consumes Focus (Spirit), so manage your resources carefully. Bring Spirit-restoring food or meditate at the camp beforehand.
Method 2: Focused Repulsion. If you have raised Focus to Level 2, you unlock Focused Repulsion. Activating this skill in close range creates a shockwave that instantly clears the crimson fog in a small radius and forces the core to the ground. This method is reliable because it does not require precise aim. The core remains exposed for roughly 10 seconds, giving you a window to deal burst damage with your strongest attacks.
Method 3: Axiom Force plus Force Current. With Axiom Force at Level 2, you can use it (L3) to lock onto the floating core and pull it out of the fog. Follow up with Force Current while maintaining the connection to stun the creature. This approach requires Force Palm Level 2, Axiom Force Level 2, and one Abyss Artifact to have all prerequisites met. It is more demanding than the other two methods but deals strong damage if executed cleanly.
After each stagger phase, the Nightmare rises again and reforms its fog cloud. Repeat the cycle until its health is depleted. Peripheral Bleed Bandits at the edges of the arena can largely be ignored unless they wander into melee range.
Fort Perwin can be a rude awakening if attempted too early. The Crimson Nightmare's persistent fog damage will drain your health rapidly without protection, and the Force Palm ability is essential for the fight. The following items and preparations are strongly recommended before entering.
Preparation | Details |
|---|---|
Grants 100% immunity to the Confusion status from the red fog. Drops from Bleed Bandits occupying Fort Perwin, though the drop rate is relatively low. Farm the bandits outside the fort first. Sells for over 14 silver if you find extras. | |
Crude Devil Mask | An alternative mask that also provides Confusion immunity. Drops from enemies inside and around the fort. Either mask works for the boss fight. |
Located at the staging camp outside the fort. Use it to sharpen your weapon and increase damage output before entering. | |
A reliable healing food. Cook it at a bonfire using Fine Meat, which can be hunted from deer in the Hernand woodlands. Bring several portions for the fight. | |
Spirit management | Force Palm and Focused Repulsion both consume Focus (Spirit). Eat Spirit-restoring food or meditate at the camp before entering to start at full capacity. |
Recommended stats | Health above 600, Stamina around 200, and Spirit between 30 and 40 is a comfortable baseline for this fight. |
Fort Perwin is occupied by the Bleed Bandits, a faction of armed outlaws who seized the fort from House Roberts. They are found throughout the interior sections and in the four surrounding sub-areas. Some Bleed Bandits wear gas masks with distinctive black eye lenses, allowing them to operate within the red fog. These mask-wearing variants are the ones who can drop the Scarlet Blades Gas Mask on death.
The Bleed Bandits respawn regularly, which makes the fort a repeatable combat zone. During the Crimson Nightmare boss encounter, a handful of bandit soldiers also patrol the edges of the arena. They can generally be avoided, but they will attack if you stray close. It is advisable to clear out all bandits in the boss arena before engaging the Nightmare, because they respawn if you die and have to retry the fight.
Fort Perwin is a popular early-game farming location thanks to its dense bandit population and their valuable drops. The Bleed Bandits drop weapons, armor, coin pouches, and occasionally the Scarlet Blades Gas Mask, which sells for over 14 silver each. Other equipment drops range from a few copper to several silver depending on the piece. Copper and Silver Pouches also appear in the loot table, providing direct currency when opened.
Crates scattered around the fort and the staging camp outside contain free vegetables and cooking ingredients. These respawn over time and provide a steady supply of materials for preparing food at nearby bonfires.
For dedicated silver farming in Hernand, Fort Perwin competes with other bandit camps but stands out because of the density of enemies and the mask drops. For a full breakdown of farming methods, see the Best Ways to Farm Money guide.
Several notable locations sit within easy reach of Fort Perwin, making the area worth exploring thoroughly after clearing the fort.
Location | Direction | Details |
|---|---|---|
Southeast (across the river) | An Ancient Ruins puzzle site at the base of the Mountain of Frozen Souls. Solving its three tile-matching puzzles rewards an Abyss Artifact. | |
Nearby (southwest Hernand) | A scholarly repository near the fort containing lore documents and collectibles. | |
North | A forested area directly north of the fort, separating it from the main city of Hernand. | |
Along the approach road | A mining site between Hernand and the fort. Also part of the Veil of the Red Smoke quest. |
You can skip most of the fort's regular enemies and run straight to the Crimson Nightmare boss arena. However, farming the Bleed Bandits outside first to obtain a Scarlet Blades Gas Mask or Crude Devil Mask makes the fight significantly easier.
Without fog immunity, the red smoke deals constant health drain. If you cannot find a mask, bring a large supply of healing food and use Focused Repulsion to periodically clear the fog around you.
Clear all Bleed Bandits in the boss arena before engaging the Nightmare. If you die during the fight and respawn, the bandits will have returned, making subsequent attempts harder.
Cook Hearty Grilled Meat at the bonfire near the staging camp using Fine Meat. Deer in the Hernand woodlands are the most convenient source of Fine Meat nearby.
After defeating the Crimson Nightmare, do not leave the area immediately. The Precipice of Echoes Ancient Ruins puzzle is a short walk southeast across the river and rewards another Abyss Artifact.
During the Veil of the Red Smoke quest, the four surrounding sub-areas can be cleared in any order. Pick the closest one first and work your way around.
Upgrading Force Palm enables triple consecutive strikes, which dramatically speeds up the stagger cycle against the Nightmare.
