Fang Without Master is the third and final sub-objective of The Greymanes' New Fangs faction quest in Crimson Desert. It belongs to the Scattered Embers quest chain within the Greymanes faction, and becomes available after completing the earlier sub-objectives: "The Nag and the Stubborn One" and A Chunk of Meat. The quest tasks you with earning the trust of a stray brown dog by feeding and petting it until you can officially take it in as your companion.
This quest is the game's introduction to the pet taming system. It is a peaceful, combat-free quest focused entirely on building trust with an animal. Once completed, the dog becomes your first pet and will follow you throughout Pywel, automatically picking up loot from defeated enemies.

Before Fang Without Master becomes available, you need to complete the two preceding sub-objectives of The Greymanes' New Fangs:
The Nag and the Stubborn One: Talk to Andrew at the Greymane Camp on Howling Hill. Andrew and Naira are arguing about whether to adopt a stray pup that Naira found. Speak to both of them, then accompany Naira to Bloomwood Ranch where she asks you to fetch some meat for the dog.
A Chunk of Meat: Travel to the City of Hernand and visit Renee's butchery. Purchase 5 pieces of Lean Meat at 15 coppers each (75 coppers total). Return to Naira at the town gate and deliver the meat. Naira then asks you to take the dog home, since she is worried Andrew will disapprove.
The entire parent quest chain requires you to have completed Greymanes Reunited at the end of Chapter 3 to unlock the Scattered Embers faction quests.
After completing A Chunk of Meat and receiving the dog from Naira, the stray brown dog will be near the trisecting curb outside Hernand Castle. The dog is wandering alone and will not approach you on its own. To begin earning its trust, you need to interact with it directly.
The dog starts at 0 trust and you must raise it to 100 trust before you can take it in. Trust is built through two actions: petting and feeding. Both actions have daily caps, so you may need to rest or wait before repeating them.
Action | Trust per Use | Daily Cap | Max Daily Trust |
|---|---|---|---|
Petting | +5 | 5 times | +25 |
Feeding (Lean Meat) | +10 | Capped at +30/day | +35 |
Feeding (Grilled Meat) | +20 | 3 times | +60 |
Feeding (Fine Meat) | +35 | 3 times | +105 |
The type of meat you feed the dog matters. Lean Meat (purchased during A Chunk of Meat) gives +10 trust per feeding. Grilled Meat, which you can prepare at a cooking pot, gives +20. Fine Meat gives the highest boost at +35 per feeding. If you use Fine Meat and feed the dog three times, you can reach up to 105 trust from feeding alone in a single day, which is already enough to hit the 100 threshold.
Open your inventory and select the meat you want to use. Choose to hold the meat in your hand, then place it on the ground near the dog. The dog will walk over and eat it, and the trust meter will increase. You can also throw the meat toward the dog to trigger the same interaction. Between feedings, pet the dog by interacting with it directly to earn additional trust.
The fastest way to complete this quest is to feed the dog three portions of Fine Meat (if available) and pet it a few times. This combination can push you past 100 trust in a single in-game session. If you only have Lean Meat from the previous quest step, alternate between feeding and petting. With Lean Meat alone, the daily caps of +35 (feeding) and +25 (petting) give a combined +60 per day, meaning you will need at least two in-game days. To advance time, rest at a campfire or cooking pot to skip 12 hours, then return to the dog and continue.
Once you reach 100 trust, a new interaction prompt appears. Hold E (or the corresponding button on your controller) when the "Take in" prompt appears. The dog is now registered as your pet and the Fang Without Master sub-quest completes, which also completes the parent quest The Greymanes' New Fangs.
Reward | Description |
|---|---|
A permanent pet companion that follows you automatically. The dog will appear under the Pets section in your inventory menu. | |
Auto-Loot Ability | While summoned, the dog runs across the battlefield after combat and automatically loots items from defeated enemies. This addresses the otherwise manual looting system and saves significant time. |
Quest Chain Completion | Completing this sub-quest finishes The Greymanes' New Fangs, which also unlocks the third objective of the Embers of Return faction quest. |
After taking in the dog, you can summon or unsummon it from the Inventory > Pets tab at any time. The dog follows you on foot and will disappear temporarily when you mount your horse. After Chapter 3, pets wait at your camp when they are unsummoned. You can have up to 30 pets in your roster, but only one can be active at a time.
If the dog disappears or seems to get stuck, open Inventory, go to the Pets tab, unsummon the dog, and then resummon it. This forces the pet to respawn at your current location.
Stock up on Lean Meat during the A Chunk of Meat step. Buy a few extra pieces beyond the 5 required, so you have enough for the trust-building phase.
If you can cook Grilled Meat or obtain Fine Meat before starting this quest, the trust grind goes much faster.
There is no combat in this quest. You do not need to prepare weapons, potions, or armor.
The dog is always found in the same general area near Hernand Castle, but it may wander slightly. Look around the trisecting curb outside the castle if it is not immediately visible.
Petting the dog between feedings is important. Even though each pet only gives +5 trust, five pets per day adds +25, which can make the difference between needing one day or two.
After completing this quest, visit other towns and settlements to find more stray dogs and cats. The pet taming system works the same way for all animals throughout Pywel.
