The Back-Alley Vendor at Mock Root Windmill is a small, easily missed merchant in the starting region of Crimson Desert. The vendor operates underneath a windmill located near Mock Root Ranch, a short ride from the City of Hernand. Despite the modest stall setup, the items this vendor stocks unlock at least two of the hidden-weapon pickups covered in the Hidden Weapons Guide: the Mask required to steal Oongka's Delesyian Weapon below Delicia, and a locked-door key needed to reach the Hondo Two-Handed Sword chest inside Lion Crest Manor.
Because the vendor is set up underneath the windmill (rather than at the windmill's main entrance), most players ride past it on the way to other starting-region objectives without realizing it is there. Stopping here on the way out of Hernand is one of the highest value early-game decisions a new save can make.
The windmill itself sits a short distance from Mock Root Ranch in the starting region. To find the vendor, approach the base of the windmill rather than the main milling entrance. The vendor's stall is in the back-alley space beneath the structure; look for the small lit setup and the merchant interaction prompt.
A practical first-visit routing: when leaving Hernand for the first time, plan to hit the windmill on the way north to Lion Crest Manor. The two stops are close enough together that completing both before continuing the main story prevents a long backtrack later in the run.
The vendor's stock is small but specifically chosen to support exploration and stealth-based pickups. Confirmed items include:
Item | Purpose | Used For |
|---|---|---|
Disguise; equipping it masks the player's identity for restricted-area interactions | Stealing Oongka's Delesyian Weapon below Delicia without aggroing the surrounding area | |
Locked-door key | Opens the inner door inside the outhouse at Lion Crest Manor | Reaching the Hondo Two-Handed Sword chest |
Additional keys | Various locked-door and locked-chest keys | Used at multiple chests and doors elsewhere in the world; recommended to buy out the full key stock on the first visit |
The transcript this article was built from explicitly recommends buying every key the vendor has in stock on the first visit. Several open chests and doors in regions further afield, and a return trip to the windmill costs more in travel time than the silver outlay.
Gates two hidden weapons. The mask unlocks the stealth pickup of Oongka's Delesyian Weapon, and the key unlocks the Hondo Two-Handed Sword. Both are listed in the Hidden Weapons Guide.
Saves backtracking. Once a player is deep into the Delicia or Lion Crest Manor region and discovers they need the mask or the key, the only path is back through the starting region. A single five-minute stop on the way out of Hernand eliminates that round trip.
Lower silver pressure later. Buying out the key stock early locks in the unlock for any future chest or door that needs one of those keys, so when a key requirement comes up unexpectedly during a later session, the item is already in inventory.
In addition to the stealth-utility stock documented above, this vendor also sells Pure Black Dye, one of the two rarest grayscale dyes in the game. The dye is not part of the merchant's default stock; it only appears after completing a chained quest sequence anchored in the Tash Kalpha region.
The unlock requires two prerequisite quests, completed in sequence:
Raiders in Muiquun: Travel to Tash Kalpha and clear the Mist Cloud Owl Raiders out of the Muiquun settlement. Report back to the guard to close out the encounter and turn in the Request to Punish Outlaws in Muiquun contract.
Lawless Market: Begin the Lawless Market wagon-theft chain at the small settlement just below the Tash Kalpha town fast travel. Eavesdrop on the wagon-theft conversation, speak with the marked NPC, then steal and deliver three wagons in sequence to the fence. The quest auto-completes silently after the third delivery.
The vendor icon does not appear at the Mock Root Windmill the moment the Lawless Market chain ends. The world state needs to be refreshed before the question-mark marker becomes interactable:
Open the world map and fast travel to any abyss nexus. The travel itself is the reset trigger; sleeping in place or waiting for an in-game day cycle does not produce the same effect.
Return to the question-mark icon at the Mock Root Windmill. The merchant marker should now display.
Approach the base of the windmill (not the main milling entrance) and interact with the back-alley stall to purchase Pure Black Dye.
If the marker still does not appear after the first fast travel, repeat the abyss-nexus hop once more. On slower client states the world reload only takes effect after a second region swap, and this consistently restores the spawn.
Item | Notes | Unlock Requirement |
|---|---|---|
Disguise used for stealth-based weapon pickups | Default stock | |
Locked-door key | Opens the inner door inside the outhouse at Lion Crest Manor | Default stock |
Additional keys | Multiple locked-chest and locked-door keys for later regions | Default stock |
Permanent grayscale dye, one-time activation via Use in inventory then dye house application | Raiders in Muiquun plus Lawless Market chain |
This is the only known vendor in the game that sells Pure Black Dye. There is no alternative crafting recipe or drop source.
Once Pure Black Dye is purchased and activated, it can be paired with Pure White Dye on different dye zones of the same armor for a high-contrast knightly look. Both dyes follow the same Use-first-then-apply-at-Wyanut-dye-house workflow.
The vendor also slots into the wider dye vendors network as a top-tier reference for late-game cosmetic builds. Compare with the back-alley shop and Patrigio's Secret Shop for other rare-stock back-alley merchants in the catalog.
Stop at the windmill on the first ride out of Hernand. Treat it as part of the starting-region setup, not as an errand to do later.
Buy every key in stock on the first visit. Stock does refresh over time, but several pickups elsewhere require an in-inventory key the moment a door is found.
Equip the mask only when you are about to steal a restricted-area item. Wearing it permanently has no upside and can cause issues with normal vendor and NPC interactions.
Save before each first-time mask use. If the area aggros despite the disguise, retreat, unequip, wait for the area to reset, and try again on a fresh save load.
