The Shazhou Uprising of 848 A.D. is the real historical event Blood Message is based on. It is the backdrop the game's narrative is set against and the source of the chaos the messenger and his son are running through.
The campaign opens with the uprising already in motion. The nameless messenger has been entrusted with a critical message that has to reach Chang'an, the capital of the Tang Empire. Everything that happens along the way is coloured by the fact that the region is in open revolt, and that the safe roads are collapsing around the player.
NetEase's choice of the Shazhou Uprising gives the game a specific historical weight. It is not a vague 'medieval China' setting; it is a real upheaval at a real moment, and the story is explicitly framed as 'the last tale of loyalty in the Great Tang.'
