Blood Message is a single-player, story-driven action-adventure game developed by 24 Entertainment's Lin'an Studio and published by NetEase Games. The publisher has positioned it as its first fully single-player focused AAA title, a deliberate departure from the live-service and MMO output that has defined the company for the past two decades. The reveal trailer premiered on June 20, 2025 at IGN Summer of Gaming 2025, and the project is built on Unreal Engine 5 with proprietary in-house tools.
The game's Chinese titles are 归唐 (Return to Tang) and 血信 (Blood Letter). Its public tagline is "The Last Tale of Loyalty in the Great Tang."

Premise
The campaign opens in the year 848 AD, during the late Tang Dynasty. The player controls The Messenger, a nameless father caught in the chaos of the Shazhou Uprising, a real historical revolt in which the people of Sha Prefecture rose against the occupying Tibetan Empire. He is entrusted with carrying word of the rebellion roughly three thousand li (about a thousand miles) east, from Shazhou (modern Dunhuang) through the Hexi Corridor and across Central Asia, to Chang'an, the imperial capital.

He does not travel alone. His young, equally nameless son walks the entire route at his side. The publisher has explicitly framed both characters as unsung heroes: ordinary people, not emperors or generals, whose names history did not bother to record. The bond between father and child is the emotional spine of the journey, and most of the dramatic weight of the campaign rests on what one is willing to give up to keep the other alive long enough to deliver the message.
Gameplay Direction
Blood Message is a linear, cinematic action-adventure built around tight, hand-authored levels rather than an open world. The publisher has been specific that this is a story-driven experience, not a sandbox. The reveal trailer demonstrated a layered combat system that mixes visceral swordplay, hand-to-hand grapples and tackles, and integrated stealth, alongside parkour traversal that included swinging across ravines and jumping between high ledges. A survival layer wraps around all of it: hunger, exposure, and the simple problem of keeping a child safe in hostile terrain.

Combat reads as deliberately brutal rather than flashy, with slashes and takedowns that emphasize weight and consequence. Combat and stealth mechanics are designed to be interchangeable; the messenger is not a soldier, and many encounters are framed so that hiding, sneaking past, or ending a fight quickly is the smarter choice than a head-on duel.
The game is being sold as a traditional buy-to-play product. There are no microtransactions, no online modes, and no live-service hooks. It is single-player from end to end.
Setting Depth
The historical backdrop is the western frontier of the late Tang Empire. After the An Lushan Rebellion weakened central authority, the Tibetan Empire seized Sha and Gua prefectures around 781 AD and held them for roughly seven decades. When the Tibetan Empire collapsed into civil war after 842 AD, Tang loyalist communities in the occupied territories began organizing to break free. The 848 AD uprising the game depicts is the historical revolt led by Zhang Yichao, a native of Sha Prefecture who later commanded the Guiyi Circuit, the Return to Righteousness Army.
Cultural authenticity has been a major emphasis of the development effort. The studio collaborated with the Gansu Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism on historical site scanning, geomorphological restoration, and cultural relic digitization. The reveal trailer reproduces a Tang-era mural from Mogao Cave 156 of the Mogao Caves complex, the same mural that historically depicts Zhang Yichao's army on campaign. Environments span Gobi-adjacent deserts, the Hexi Corridor's mountain passes, and avalanche-prone highlands.
Studio and Pedigree
Development is led by Lin'an Studio, a team within 24 Entertainment, which sits inside NetEase's ThunderFire division. Lin'an is the historical name of Hangzhou, where the studio is based. 24 Entertainment is the same parent company behind Naraka: Bladepoint, but Blood Message is being built by a different team within that organization, staffed in part by veterans of major international AAA studios. The lead producer is Zhipeng Hu, an Executive Vice President at NetEase.

The publisher has been public about treating this title as a flagship for its move into premium single-player development, and the project has been in some form of pre-production since 2018, with full development beginning in 2021.
Release Status
An official release date has not been announced. The publisher has confirmed only that the game is in active development and targeting PC and consoles. Specific console platforms have not been formally confirmed beyond that umbrella statement. Industry chatter has pointed to a second-half 2026 launch window at a seventy dollar price point, but neither figure is official; both should be treated as unverified leaks rather than confirmed facts.

If this is the first page being read, the Getting Started article is the natural next step. From there, the lore branch covers the Shazhou Uprising and the wider Tang Empire, while the character pages for The Messenger and The Son unpack what is publicly known about the two protagonists.
