Mikoto is one of four characters the developers held back until launch day. He is a blighted boy, marked by the same contamination that makes Emma an outcast, and he is travelling to gather amber so he can save his homeland. He is voiced in Japanese by Akira Ishida.

Where Emma Meets Him
Mikoto turns up during the Ancient Civilization Zone stretch of the journey, in the run-up to the Lacerta fight, which puts the meeting early in the route rather than at the endgame. Amber is the currency of the world and the thing every settlement is short of, so a boy crossing blighted country to collect it puts him in the same position as everyone else Emma passes: reliant on a resource that only exists where the danger is.
His later role runs directly into end-of-game story material, which this page does not cover.
