Resources are the foundation of every system in Windrose. Everything you build, craft, cook, and trade requires gathered materials. The game features a tiered resource system where basic materials like wood and stone are abundant on the starting island, while advanced materials like copper ingots and rare herbs are found on later islands. Understanding where to find each resource and how to process it efficiently is critical for progression.
These are the fundamental materials found on every island. They form the building blocks for tools, structures, and basic equipment.
Resource | Gathered From | Tool Required | Primary Uses |
|---|---|---|---|
Wood | Trees | Stone Axe or better | Building, crafting stations, ship repair, charcoal |
Stone | Rock deposits | Stone Pickaxe or better | Building foundations, tools, workbenches |
Plant Fiber | Bushes and ground plants | Bare hands | Rope, fabric, bandages |
Clay | Muddy patches near ruins | Stone Pickaxe | Smelting Furnace, Charcoal Kiln, pottery |
Wood and stone are consumed in enormous quantities throughout the game. Keeping a stockpile of several hundred of each at your main base is good practice. You will constantly need them for building, repairs, and crafting station upgrades.
Raw resources are refined into processed materials at crafting stations. Processed materials are used in advanced recipes and higher-tier equipment.
Material | Crafted From | Crafting Station | Uses |
|---|---|---|---|
Charcoal | Wood | Charcoal Kiln (25 Wood, 20 Clay) | Smelting, advanced crafting |
Copper Ingot | Copper Ore + Charcoal | Smelting Furnace (15 Clay) | Copper tools, ship cannons, equipment |
Planks | Wood | Workbench | Building, ship upgrades, furniture |
Nails | Copper Ingot | Workbench | Ship upgrades, advanced building |
Coarse Fabric | Plant Fiber | Workbench | Sails, Wharf construction, clothing |
Rope | Plant Fiber | Workbench | Ship rigging, equipment, building |
Copper is the primary metal available in the demo. Copper Ore is found in cave deposits on the second and third islands. Mining copper requires at least a Stone Pickaxe. The ore must be smelted into Copper Ingots at a Smelting Furnace using charcoal as fuel.
Copper Ingots are one of the most valuable processed materials. They are needed for tool upgrades, ship cannons (10 per set of 12-Pounders), hull bracing, and copper-tier weapons and armor. Prioritize smelter construction and regular mining runs once you reach the second island.
Food ingredients are gathered from the environment and used in cooking recipes. Each island has different ingredients available.
Ingredient | Source | Islands Found |
|---|---|---|
Coconut | Ground near palm trees on beaches | Most islands |
Dodo Meat | Dropped by Coastal Dodos | Starting island, coastal areas |
Boar Meat | Dropped by Boars | Forested islands |
Egg | Near Dodo nesting areas | Starting island, camps |
Pepper | Bushes on later islands | Second and third islands |
Sweet Potato | Patches near ruins | Second and third islands |
Banana | Trees and ground in tropical areas | Tropical islands |
Healing Herbs | Growing throughout the environment | All islands |
Resources used for alchemy potions and elixirs:
Ingredient | Source | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Misty Orchid | Found on second island | Unlocks the Alchemy Table when picked up |
Healing Herbs | Growing on all islands | Used for healing potions; 15 herbs for a full potion |
Glowing Blue Flowers | Caves and dark areas | Renewable; used for weak healing potions; emit a humming sound |
Rare Red Plant | Ruins and camps on later islands | One-time find; used for strong healing potions |
These items have no crafting use and exist solely to be sold to merchants for Piastres:
Trade Good | Details |
|---|---|
Naval Supplies | Moderate value, looted from ships and naval encounters |
Medical Crates | Moderate value, found in camps and dungeons |
Contraband | High value, rare drops from pirate ships and hidden caches |
Some resources are rare, limited, or found only in specific circumstances:
Resource | Details |
|---|---|
Gunpowder | Obtained only by raiding pirate camps. Essential for firearms and explosives. Save it for boss fights. |
Tumbaga Ingot | A rare crafting material found on the starting island. Used for unique weapon upgrades. |
Crab Trophies | Dropped by crabs on shorelines. Used as comfort decorations, not crafting materials. |
Buried Treasure | Found with a Shovel at marked locations. Contains Piastres and occasionally rare items. |
Better tools gather resources faster and unlock access to harder materials. Tool progression follows a tier system:
Tool Tier | Materials | Gathering Speed |
|---|---|---|
Stone Axe / Stone Pickaxe | 3 Wood + 3 Stone | Slow, basic resources only |
Copper Axe / Copper Pickaxe | Copper Ingots + Wood | Faster, access to all current resources |
The beginner's guide from the community strongly recommends upgrading tools before weapons. Faster gathering compounds over time, letting you stockpile resources more efficiently for everything else.
Resources are stored in baskets placed at your base. Each basket holds a limited number of item stacks. You can craft directly from nearby baskets without moving items to your personal inventory first, which is a significant quality-of-life feature.
Tips for resource organization:
Use signs on baskets to label contents (e.g., "Wood/Stone", "Metal", "Food", "Trade Goods")
Keep processing materials near their crafting stations. Store wood near the Charcoal Kiln, ore near the Smelter.
Press Q to split stacks when distributing resources between baskets.
Build multiple bases on different islands. Each base can have its own storage for local resources.
Clay deposits are easy to miss. Look for dark, cracked muddy patches between Ancient Ruins and Copper Deposits.
Glowing blue flowers make a humming sound. Listen for them in dark caves to find alchemy ingredients.
Recruit NPCs at your settlement to assist with resource gathering. They harvest automatically over time.
Every new ingredient you pick up unlocks new recipes. Explore thoroughly to expand your crafting options.
