Subtitle (in-game tagline) | Fish are food, not friends. |
Reef Snapper is caught with a Fishing Rod in shallow water tiles. Shallow-water tiles are the lighter blue patches that hug the coast, including reef and mangrove margins. Cast from a beach, a small boat, or the side of a docked ship over reef shallows. The shallow rotation is made up of six Uncommon species: Blue Tang, Moon Angelfish, Queen Angelfish, Pink Wrasse, Sapphire Wrasse, and Reef Snapper. The similarly named Red Snapper is a Rare deep-water fish, so it does not appear in the shallows. The other deep-water species, Emerald Bluefish, Giant Mackerel, and Large Barracuda, also bite only over the dark blue deep tiles offshore.
Bait quality and rod tier raise the catch rate but do not affect which species bite. Higher-tier rods have shorter cast times and better tug response, which matters when several bite windows overlap on a busy fishing trip. Since the shallow species all share the same rarity, you will pull a roughly even mix of all six on a long reef run.
Reef Snapper shares its habitat and rarity with the rest of the shallow rotation. All of them weigh 0.2 kg, stack to 10, and fillet into the same ingredient, so they are interchangeable for cooking and only differ in appearance and Fisherman Ring collection progress.

The primary use is processing into Fish Fillet at a kitchen Cookware station. Each fish can also be filleted directly from the inventory. As a small Uncommon catch, Reef Snapper yields only a few fillets per fish, so the larger Rare and Epic deep-water fish are better when you want raw fillet volume. Fish Fillet stacks high and feeds into recipes like Fish and Tostones, which sit at the top end of food buffs. Selling raw is generally a poor option compared to filleting first.
Catching at least one of every fish species, all six shallow fish plus the four deep-water fish, unlocks a unique Fisherman Ring reward that gives a chance to reel an extra fish on a successful catch, with a stronger Major Fisherman Ring version that improves the chance further. Reef Snapper is one of the easiest ticks on that list, since it bites readily in any reef shallows.
Reef Snapper weighs 0.2 kg per fish and stacks to 10, so it is one of the cheapest fish to carry. Shallow-water fishing also pairs well with shoreline foraging: beach a small boat near a reef, fish through the rotation, then walk inland for plants and animal hunts. A Fishing Barrel at your base keeps the haul out of your backpack between trips.
